    Excel 2000 Problem opening files

Last monday I clicked on my quick launch icon for my time card, which is in excel. It opened up, but I got an error message saying that excel had an error, send report or don't send report. Closed everthing out and clicked on the icon again, but this time excel oppend but the file did not. I get just a blank (don't know what to call it) spreadsheet. There are no cells to enter anything in. I do get the "File, Edit, View, and so on" at the top. I can click on File than Open and browes for the file and open it that way, but I can't open any Excel file by double clicking it in explorer.

Anybody know haow to fix this?

    Thanks. Some good reading there.
I can double click the Excel.exe and everything opens fine, but when I try to double click on any .XLS to open it, it wont. Even if I have Excel open before I double click the file.
The only way I can open an Excel file is by going to File>Open and then browes for the file. Once I do that everything is fine.

    Hi Larry,

Try this, go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options in the third dialogue box click the "Double-click to open an item" > OK. See if that the problem?

It is already set that way. I can double click on a .xls file and it will open Excel but not the file.
Just tried doing a repair install, with no luck.
Then tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Still the same problem.
I guess the next place to start looking would be the registery, but I don't know what to look for.

    Hi Larry, oldchippy,

With the number of entries that Excel puts in the registry you would indeed be brave to change anything that you found there.

some things to try (yes, I know that you did a re-install)

    Close Excel and
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /unregserver
    then
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /regserver

Search for a file *.xlb and remove it

Search for a file Personal.xls and rename (to hide) it.

In Excel, check Tools, Options, General and the 'At Startup, open all files in' and clear the folder name if not required.

    see if that changes anything.

Typed those things in and let it do it's thing, same results.
The only ".xlb" file that was found was "excel.xlb". I deleted that. Same results.
    I didn't find a "Personal.xls"

    Thanks for the Help!!

    Larry,

reading back to your first post, you said " I get just a blank (don't know what to call it) spreadsheet. There are no cells to enter anything in"

    is this a real Spreadsheet?

did you try View, Normal ?

can you post that blank book.
