Excel 2013 Slow - Caused by zoom levels and screen resolution?

Its well documented that Excel 2013 is quite slow for some people. I'm one of those people and i have tried all of the usual tips for making it faster, like the 'graphics' DWORD in the registry, disabling graphics acceleration, trying in safe mode etc.

The problem that bugs me the most is when you type in a cell and press enter, it takes half a second to move to the cell below.
What i have found is that changing the zoom level to 100% gets rid of this problem. Its not possible for me to have the zoom level on 100% all of the time due to the fact i use a laptop and a desktop with a 27inch monitor, and the report template won't fit on screen.

Normally, the zoom is on 85% which was fine with Excel 2003. I recently upgraded to 2013 as well as purchasing a new laptop. Due to the new ribbon they have added to Office, i zoomed out to 80% to make things look more or less the same as they did on the old laptop. But the performance at 80% was more than twice as bad as it was at 85% which in itself was a lot worse than at 100%.

Now if i use the same excel workbook on my desktop, with the same 80, 85 & 100% zoom levels, the performance problems don't exist.

Why would Excel slow down because of the zoom levels and the screen resolution?

Why don't you set calculation to manual while entering your data and then reset it to automatic when you are done?

You can do that manually using the Formula Tab and selecting calculation.

You can create a Macro to automate the process and assign a short cut key to it.

No thats not an option for me.

Turns out it was the conditional formatting that was slowing things down.

There are a lot of rules on this worksheet and 3 or 4 were slowing things down. Using things like $A$1:$A$30 is slower than $A:$A. I have some cells that are formatted depending on several other cells, these seem to slow it down the most.

But again, keeping the zoom at 100% doesn't slow it down at all! Very strange.
