find a recipe inside other recipes.

I am a bit desperate for help. What I need to do is the same as to search a recipe inside other recipes. Assuming that all ingredients are expressed in a number of columns (assuming N columns), and each row contains the record of the recipes with non-zero in the columns corresponding to the ingredients, I need to find out whether the same non-zero ingredients appeared in other recipes, starting from the smallest recipes with the least number of ingredients. I already did counting and sorting the number of ingredients for each row, smallest in the bottom of the rows). How do I go from here? Appreciate some light! Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook?

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

    Thank Ali.

I attached the actual data in the attachment.

    Notes:
Only non-zeros count and the non-zero value doesn’t matter and can be considered the same.
Count_non_0 is not the data, but the result of counting for sorting purpose.

    Possible findings:
    1. an upper row has exactly the same non-zero columns as a lower row. Example:
Row SP16 is equal to SP15. So, the finding output of Row SP16 can be marked “SP15”(mean it is the same as SP15). The same for Row SJ20 = SJ17

    2. An upper row contains one lower row, plus one or more ingredients, having all the columns of the each lower rows and more . Row ST07 is contained within ST08, the finding of ST08 = ST07+ YW (each ingredient to be separated by a + sign. GB06 output = ST07 + SJ (same for GB04,GB03), etc.

    3. An upper row contains multiple lower rows and ingredients. Each contained row to be separated by & sign. Such as DU14 = SI12 + BL + DU & DU24 + SI + LI + SJ + GB & ……(more rows below).
