Bring through value of cell above or below VLOOKUP result

    Hi Folks,

I have a spreadsheet that keep league stats on our local pool team.

Each player has their own tab with stats on who they have played. Where the player has played on a doubles game I would like to bring show who they were partnered with for the game. In the attachment I have inserted a column (L) in the tab entitled Phil Barber. So far I can VLOOKUP the game from the 'Results' tab but can't figure a way to bring through who he played with.

In the results tab the doubles games always have a blank line both above and below the game. I can VLOOKUP to bring through Phil but I need a formula to check if the cell above Phil is blank or not. If it is blank bring through the value below the VLOOKUP and if it is not blank bring through the value above the VLOOKUP.

I appreciate this doesn't make much sense but maybe the attachment may help.

    Thanks
