Using a Conditional Format Icon Set for text entered in the SAME cell?

Hi!

I am aware of a number of ways to use Conditional Formatting Icon Sets based on text in a different cell. Even how to display text in a cell along with an Icon based on a text or value entered elsewhere (with a Custom Format).

However, how can one show an Icon as a result of text (maybe/maybe not controlled via a Data Validation [drop down] List) entered into the SAME cell? I.e. functionally identical to what happens when entering a number in to cell with Conditional format Icon Sets of Type: Number.

The Type: Formula does not allow reference formulas (to for example go do an INDEX MATCH... to assign a numeral value to a text string in a named Array) which one could then use to choose the desired icon based on a value.

Or even create the illusion that is what is happening by having a ‘results cell’ display in the same spot as the ‘entry cell’. Even, if necessary, using a hidden ‘helper’ cell.

(This in Office 365 ProPlus)

Ideas? Thanks!

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
