Dynamic Worksheet Reference without using INDIRECT

I was curious if there is a way to dynamically reference a worksheet in a different excel file without using the INDIRECT function. At this point I am using INDIRECT but it requires that the worksheet I am referencing be opened so I am trying to see if there is a way to dynamically reference without having the sheet being referenced open. To access closed wbks, except for SUMPRODUCT, you will need VBA one way or another or a 3D reference depending on your formula/function
