    Excel 1997-2003 Compatibility checker Screenshot

    Hello

Can anyone tell me what this compatibility checker caption means its appeared in a file of mine when trying to save the file.

Any help would be greatly received. my hunch is the version I'm using is way to old or some form of formatting is not compatible with this version.

    Many Thanks

Pretty much what it says on the tin. More recent versions of Excel have many more options for Conditional Formatting. So, if you have used any of the advanced options AND you want to maintain compatibility with earlier versions, it will be highlighted as an issue.

It means that you are saving the workbook in the old xls format, which does not support any features introduced in 2007 or later versions.

Also, you might want to amend your profile, since there is no such version as 2006 for Office.

So an update is needed in order for me to save file without seeing this caption.

    Thanks

If you only have 2003, I'm not sure how you could have applied features that don't exist in 2003??

Are you being sent Excel files from other sources? Do you need to edit them, or just look at them.

I can't see how an incompatibility between an old version of Excel and an old version of the operating system would rear its head overnight, though not impossible, I would guess.

It may be an issue with the CF if you have maybe added and deleted rows and/or columns and/or cells. I'd be inclined to clear all the CF and reapply it step by step.

Might be worth posting a sample workbook to see if there is anything obvious although I cannot test it as I no longer have Excel 2003.

To the best of my recollection, 2003 did not have "themes" that you mention in that thread. Are you actually using Excel 2003?

First and foremost thanks for being patient, no your completely right I using MS office with excel 2007, and save my excel files using (1997-2003) workbook rather than excel workbook, not sure if that make any difference but quite sure you can use that file in later versions of excel beyond 2007, correct me if I'm wrong.

Thing is the problem occurred last month when updating my budget spreadsheet which I do every month, I usually format a cell either green or red using the (colour theme) however last month it just idle as mentioned in a previous post I then had to restart my computer.

    Many Thanks

It looks like you have added some formatting that will not work in earlier file formats. Why are you saving it in xls format, rather than one of the newer formats? (Note: you could simply uncheck the checkbox on the compatibility checker dialog so that it doesn't try and check the file when you save it.)

When you say xls format its an excel file, and also newer formats do tell, I shall uncheck box. And also the version of MS 2007 will this run on windows 8.1 for at least the next two to three years possibly longer.

    Thanks

xls format is the old 97-2003 file format. In 2007 and later you have several options:

xlsx - if you don't have macros in the file
xlsm - if you do have macros in the file

Both of these are stored as plain XML files in a compressed structure.

xlsb is probably the most direct equivalent of the old xls format as it can contain macros or not, and is stored in binary format.

I can't possibly say how long 2007 will work for. It's already out of support, but I would be surprised if it doesn't carry on working as long as you don't change operating system version.

A .xls file is the early/original format of an Excel file. From Excel 2007 on, the structure and format of Excel files changed and you have .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb and .xlst, the last being a Template and the one prior, I believe, is a binary format. .xlsx is the basic file type, data only, no macros. .xlsm, similar but macro enabled.
