    Numbering a multi-heading Excel column

I have an Excel sheet that needs a numbered heading (column H). How can I use only functions rather than VBA in this case?

I want to give a numeral multi-level list for every cell in the column I by using functions in the column H.

Re: Numbering a multi-heading Excel column

Hello tdungdinh and Welcome to Excel Forum.
This proposal employs three helper columns which may be moved and/or hidden for aesthetic purposes.
The first helper column counts the countries using: =IF(ISNA(MATCH(I2,B$2:B$21,0)),"",SUM(MAX(L$1:L1),1))
The second helper column assigns values to classes within countries using: =IF(L1<>"",97,IF(ISNA(MATCH(I2,C$2:C$21,0)),"",SUM(INDEX(M$1:M1,AGGREGATE(14,6,ROW(M$1:M1)/(ISNUMBER(M$1:M1)),1)),1)))
The third help column counts names within classes using: =IF(ISNA(MATCH(I2,A$2:A$21,0)),"",SUM(N1,1))
    Column H is then populated using: =IF(ISNUMBER(L2),ROMAN(L2),IF(ISNUMBER(M2)," "&CHAR(M2)," "&N2))
Let us know if you have any questions.
