How to pull Cells based on adjacent cells

So Im sorry if this has been posted somewhere before, I cant remember the term for it to look it up.

This is something I learned how to do in college and did often but I have forgotten what its called and how to do it.

I want a formula or function where i can reference lets say a big list of names, and it only pulls all the names that have an X or something in the adjacent cell. or maybe it only pulls all the names where the adjacent cell is blank. and that new condensed table will update itself if I were to change the data in the adjacent cells.

Can someone tell me how to do that?

How about using a Filter? An example would have been nice to help explain (like the Forum rules state). Look up filtering - it should help you

Sorry, filtering isnt what I am looking for.

    Here is a simple example:
    Attachment 700860

I know I used to know some formula or function that would look at the columns on the left and pull the names into those tables by referencing the day of the week referenced at the top of the table and searching for all instances of that in the column.

Re: How to pull Cells based on adjacent cells

The attachment seems to be working for me, Im not sure how else to post an image on here.

the data on the left looks like this:

    john| Mon
    Mark | wed
    angela | mon
    laura | thurs
    cheryl | thurs
    susan | wed
    bill | mon
    kenny | tues
    bobby | thurs
    Dave | wed
    tyler | mon
    Joe | fri

(names and days in separate cells)
now I know i used to know a formula or function where I would, for example type "Mon" at the top in some other part of the worksheet (so this wasnt a filter), the formula would reference that top cell, it would reference that data, and i would copy it down, and it would find all instances of Mon and pull the cell next to it. so the end result would be:

    Mon
    John
    angela
    bill
    Tyler

and i could do the same for the other weekdays and break the data up into groups like that. Vlookup will pull the very fist instance it finds, so doing this i would just have a table that lists john times.

Hello faroresdragn and Welcome to Excel Forum.
Try pasting the following into cell E2, dragging the fill handle over to cell I2 and then, while E2:I2 are still selected, drag the fill handle down to cell I13:
    Formula: copy to clipboard

Note that the reason that Tyler does not display in cell E5 is because there is an extra space after Mon in cell B12.
