result based on pivot date group

We have a table listing clients visits including the fields:
clientId, dateOfVisit
1,21/10/2008
1,22/10/2008
1,10/11/2008
2,10/10/2008

And we want to make a pivot table, so can slice it further, to show new clients per month and returning clients per month.

Apart from writing some VB that creates a new column(s) to easily feed the pivot table I cant think of any solution at all.

Anybody think of a clever way of doing it? Counting where it is not the first visit and the first visit wasnt in the same month seems tricky to do with Excel functions.
