Using the color fill to tell the cell to use a formula

I am fairly new to using excel, and would appreciate any help.

I am not even sure if excel will do what I am requesting.

I am inserting numbers into a cell, then using the sum formula, but I only want the formula to add the cells which have a color fill into it.

    Is this possible?

You will need to code to sum by colour

I cannot seem to make this work. How do you code a group of cells?

Smile Re: Using the color fill to tell the cell to use a formula

I think what I am trying to do is beyond my capabilities in Excel. I don't know what a module is, or how to make one.

What I am trying to do is calculate the pay units for a contractor that is stringing conductor for a transmission line.

I have the span lenghts from each structure in a row across, and I want to add only the ones that have a back fill of color.

At the end of the row, I have a formula that calculates the feet into miles, x3 as there are 3 conductor wires in each span.

I have only used excel for a short time and am very limited in using formulas and functions.

I appreciate your suggestions, but I am almost convinced one of the engineers is going to have to figure this out.

    Thank you.

    Vicki

Re: Using the color fill to tell the cell to use a formula

Macro solution is explained above and you can't make it without it.

But did you think about some other approach? For example to write in other row some word (OK in example) or date and make some other criterias... and much more

Re: Using the color fill to tell the cell to use a formula

Yes, I thought about using dates in another row, but my spreadsheet is made up of many rows for many different pay units and the stringing of the conductor will be very fluid, so I thought the color would be more visual.

I am just an assistant, and I can give this to my boss, who is an engineer and he can write a formula for what I am trying to do.

Or, he can send it too his support group. My boss is the Project Manager of the construction of this 57 mile transmission line in remote part of Alaska. All the work is done by helicopter, as there are no roads.

I appreciate everone's help and suggestions.

If I had time, I would go take an Excel class!

Well, try opposite approach: with conditional formating arrange colors of your workbook so it will be more visual.

Most of us never take an Excel class
