Live update of excel from databsae

I am currently working with a few databases to pull certain information and collate it within a spreadsheet. Is there any way I can programme a formula for excel to automatically search out updates in a database to save me doing 101 excel downloads and VLOOKUPs every day?

Any advise would be appreciated...even negative, at least it will stop me wondering.
