    Placeholder / formula help

I'm using microsoft excel 07 and I need some help. I have a four column spread sheet

    date / area / name / cost

I'm trying to create a formula that can find a certian area lets say "Area 4" on any given row and count them. so for example if there is 50 row's 12 are Area 4's

    Is this possible?

    Re: Placeholder / formula help

Sounds like you need to use COUNTIF.

    For example: =COUNTIF($B$2:$B$51,"Area 4")

    Or: =COUNTIF($B$2:$B$51,4)
