    Best 5 scores of 60

    I am trying to use excel to identify the best 5 golf scores out a column of 50 or 60 scores. Does anyone have any knowledge of whether or not this can be done and how?

    Select the scores and go to Conditional Formatting on the Home tab. Choose Top/Bottom Rules and Top 1o Items.

    Then change the number of items to 5.

    Sorted!

    There is probably several ways to do it. One way is to use the "small" function. This formula searches a data set and returns the "Nth" smallest value. =small(A1:A60,1) would return the smallest number. =small(A1:A60,2) would return the 2nd smallest number....etc.

    I have attached an example for you.

    Of course in my example, and likely in real life, you will return some of the same scores because of ties. Not sure if this is an issue.....

    Wow Sunbanjo, that is so much easier than my way

    Of course in golf, the top scores are the lowest, so you'd wanna pick "bottom 10"

    Hi aeolusjm

    Assuming your scores are in column A, Try in B1 and copy down 5 cells.

    =SMALL($A$1:$A$60,ROW())

    This will bring in duplicates as well.

    The attached file will pull the 5 highest scores along with the names attached to them. Any tied scores are broken.

    Identify is kind of ambiguous. Can you be a bit more specific? Also, what if there are ties? A "best 5" may be more than 5 depending on ties.

    Thanks so very much. I can work with this. In the event of a tie, we split the prize. For example if $5.00 were for 5th place and 3 tied, each would get $1.00 and the balance would go into the hole in 1 pot.

    That looks like it rewards the highest score, but in golf the reward is to the lowest. What part of the formula needs to change to reflect this?

    Ok, this time I think that I have it right....lowest scores are best. This will give the lowest 5 scores and ties. So if the top 5 scores are within 1 shot there will be many ties. Play with the scores and see if this works for you.
