Index, match, match Question!. Seems so simple but can't figure it out...

So, my question is:
Let’s say I type in “a”, I want it to match it to value in Row A whenever there is TEXT in a cell.

So for example:
- If I put in “c”, “2” should appear.
- If I put in “g” or “h”, “5” should appear.

Would I use Index, match, match in this case? If so, I’m very confused how to do it…

Attached is a modified version of your posted workbook.
In column H are the letters
In column I is the column header where that lettered row first has text

Cell I2 and copied down uses this formula:

In other words, you want to return the column header that corresponds to the cell on a specific row that is not blank?

Try this...

A12 = some letter that is one of the row headers

This array formula** entered in B12:

=INDEX(B1:F1,MATCH(TRUE,INDEX(B2:F9,MATCH(A12,A2:A9,0),0)<>"",0))


** array formulas need to be entered using the key
combination of CTRL,SHIFT,ENTER (not just ENTER).
Hold down both the CTRL key and the SHIFT key
then hit ENTER.
