VLOOKUP From a Table to Another Table

    Hi all,

I posted this question in the Excel Basics forum, but am yet to have any luck, and I would really appreciate an answer quite soon as it is a current problem I am working on, hence posting it in this forum also.

Is it possible to use a VLOOKUP (or HLOOKUP), to check if any one reference number in a row of reference numbers is present in another column of reference numbers.

Then, if it is, find this particular reference number in the vertical list, and pull out the value associated with that number (in a column immediately to the right of the reference numbers)

So, I have Reference number data in table A2:H4000, and another set of codes in table J2:K2000

What I want is a function in cell I2, that looks across the row A2:H2 and says, right, are any of these reference numbers present in the column J2:J2000. Then, if it finds such a reference number in A2:H2, it takes the corresponding value, in column K, associated with that reference number.

    I hope this makes sense.

If I had the data on my person, I would upload a screenshot, unfortunately, I don't, sorry.

    Thanks for the help

Will there only ever be 1 or no matches?

As far as my knowledge of the data tells me, yes, there should only ever be 1 or no matches, but I cannot guarantee that 100%. Assuming there will only ever be 1 or no matches, though, would be a great start.

    Thanks for any input.

without a sample, this is difficult. Usually you need to have your data formatted in a certain way for the vlookup or hlookup to be effective. For example, if you have a table with data in cells c1:e3 (a 3x3 table) and you want to check to see if the value of a1 is located and pull a piece of data that corresponds and insert this into b1, the formula would be (located in cell b1):
Please Login or Register to view this content.
if the value of a1 was located somewhere within the c1:e1 cells, the lookup would pull whatever piece of data was located in the 3rd cell down.
is this what you were looking for or am i off base?

    Thanks for the reply,

You are a little off base. I do understand H and V lookups in finding locating a single value in a set of data.

My problem, is that I want a single function, that looks across an entire row of reference numbers, and says if any one of these numbers is contained within my 'other' table. Then, at least, flag this row.

Maybe the only way is to flag each individual cell of row, and use a =count?

Do you have a better idea of my problem?

I'm not too sure. Hopefully one of the more high level members can answer that for you.
