Reduce Image Size in Word 2007

    Hello,

I was working with a large Word 2007 document that contains many images.

Each image was inserted into the document and then reduced in size by simple dragging an image corner.

Now each image still retain the full space occupation in MB because the image was not really resized.

There is a Word function to reduce images space accordingly to their size on the word document ?

Select a picture. Then "Picture Tools" should appear: choose "Format", and in the "Adjust" group, select "Compress Pictures" and you can select whether to compress just one or all pictures in the document, as well as deleting cropped areas and the resolution.

Simply re-scaling an image doesn't change the pixel count - As Bernie indicated, you need to use the "Compress Pictures" function if you want to reduce the pixel count and, hence, the file size.

The suggested feature has no effect on the selected files that retain full size.

The total file size is unchanged and even inside the \word\media folder of the docx file, each single image shows its original size.

Evidently, then either you have not compressed the images or, even at their reduced size, the pixel density is no more than the images would have when compressed.. Do note that only bitmap images are compressible; raster images cannot be compressed.

    All images are jpeg files.

If all images are resized the total word file size should at least be cut in half.

Please read again my previous post. I have already given you the most likely explanations as to why the sizes might not be reduced. Merely rescaling the images has no effect on the pixel counts.

Yes, I'm perfectly aware of this and is what I was saying in my initial post.

The problem is that the "Compress Pictures" function has no effect on my original document.

If I apply the "Compress Pictures" function on a newly created doc with an image scaled multiple times, I can see the file size reduced from 259 to 144 and finally to 44 KB.

For some reason the "Compress Pictures" is not working on my initial doc containing lot of jpg images.

And I have already explained multiple times why that might be so. I'm not going to waste any more time on this.

Sometimes, documents get corrupted to some degree, and that may affect the compression. Try saving copies of it with different formats (docx, doc, etc.) then opening the copies and trying the compression again. If that fails, try removing each of the pictures, trying the compression after removal, then replacing the picture. It may be that one picture file has some strange property that is affecting the compression.

You can also try copying the contents of the file into a new blank file - the 'container' file may be bad.

... if you think you are wasting your time, do some relaxing activities like playing chess, gardening or birdwatching or ... simply do not respond.
What you said do not explain why the "Compress Pictures" works on doc A and not in doc B.

Re: Reduce Image Size in Word 2007

Under "Compress Pictures" > "Options" you can choose from 220, 150 or 96 ppi.

Selecting 150 or 96 I was able to shrink document size from 1164 KB to 779 and 499 respectively.

220 ppi was always selected before this post, and the file size was reduced of only 2KB.

Comparing the original \word\media folder before and after the "Compress Pictures" command I can notice that with 220 ppi only one jpg file was compressed, with 150 ppi half images were affected by the compress command and with 96 ppi all jpg files were modified.

In your previous post you said that you were not going to waste anymore time on this post, but as far as I can see you are still following and replying on it ...

Now guess who's the time waster...

The only thing proved here is that you have nor read all posts.

The not wasting more time relates to trying to explain basic concepts. Now all you need to do is to study English as a second language since it's evidently working for you as a first language...
