    this forum's password rules?

Hope this is the appropriate place for this question.

What are the rules for new passwords in this forum? And where is that documented?

I searched the FAQ. Didn't find anything. Maybe I overlooked it.

I expected to see something on the Settings page for changing the password. Nada. I expected a pop-up when I entered an invalid (?) password. Nada. (But I did not go so far as to commit it.)

    Anyway:

    1. What is the min and max length?

    2. What characters are allowed? Not allowed? Some systems permit non-alphanumeric characters; some don't. Some systems permit a limited set of non-alphanumeric.

    3. Are there any structural requirements? It is not uncommon to require that there be at least one letter, one number, one uppercase letter, and one lowercase letter.

Any guidance or pointer to a written explanation would be appreciated. TIA.

As far as I am aware, there are, sadly, no rules regarding the composition of passwords here. To confirm this, I will double check with the Tech Team and pass their reply on to you.

REALLY good question though, thank you.

Unfortunately, the security level is out of the hands of those who help here!

I believe the default vBulletin requirement is 4 characters or more. There wasn't a complexity requirement (or ability to set one) in the software itself that I know of.

Thanks. The reference to vBulletin allowed me to find some information which allowed me to infer that the following is sufficient: 8 to 16 characters composed of some combination of "a" through "z" and "A" through "Z" and "0" through "9" and any of the symbols "#$%^&_" (not including quotes). The password can start with a non-alphanumeric symbol. And the password can be changed more than once in a day.

Of course, that does not speak to necessary requirements. But it's good enough for my immediate purposes.

    To clarify....

You quoted me as writing ``...vBulletin allowed...: 8 to 16 characters composed of`` etc.

I did not mean to imply that I found vBulletin rules to that effect.

Instead, I inferred what was acceptable (not rules per se) from what I found in a google search for vBulletin password policies.

Specifically, I found suggestions for what makes a "strong" password for vBulletin forums, in general.

Then I confirmed that those recommendations work with excelforum.com, in particular.

aahh OK gotcha, thanks for the clarification

I just checked the VBul. site and apart from it being hard to navigate, I could find nothing regarding PW requirements.
Hopefully the TT can get back to me soon
