    Practice projects forum

I'm currently sitting at work awaiting clearances between roles, as a result I'm bored and looking for something to get my teeth into for a bit. Trouble is unless you have an actual problem to solve yourself its difficult to think something to develop.

This got me thinking that there are often a lot of posts from newbies asking for advice on books etc to help them learn and would it be an idea for us to have a forum with some sample projects in, that others have done or even can just think of? I'm not thinking these would be posts that require an answer but more along the lines of "create a spreadsheet that will take in x, y and z and perform these functions before producing the following output"

Newcomers get a chance to play on with something, people can then help each other out in the thread with questions and answers and it may also give established members some challenges!

Each thread can be tagged with the proposed timescales and difficulty, for example "creating a UDF that calculates area of a shape" may be down as a 1 hour Beginner while a full calculation tool could be 1 week Expert.

ps if anyone has any ideas for projects I can play around with please let me know!

Nice idea - very unlikely ever to be implemented, though - the overheads would be too great. It would take too much manual upkeep for the infrastructure we currently have to cope with.

What are you wanting to practise? We might be able to suggest some ideas if you can give a specific area of interest or focus.

Hi Ali, thanks for the input, out of interest (in case I've not explained my thought properly) why do you see it as having any manual upkeep?

I just see this as being another forum group where users post their ideas for "projects" in a way, the same as the main forum but where the OP is not looking for an answer, it may be that I've just spent a week working on something and found it really interesting and challenging so I post the details for others to look at if they want to. Other than the usual moderating for scammers etc I dont see there being any additional work for the team? Theres probably a lot more for the poster in that you couldn't really post a 3 liner as it needs detail and explanation around what is required.

I find the main forum helps in a way to relieve the boredom I'm talking about, the problem is that everyone is too damn good! so you see a topic that sounds interesting but you then read the answer and its no longer a mystery! I generally trawl the Unanswered threads for that reason, trouble is, if its unanswered in here then far greater Excel minds than mine have already failed to resolve it so although giving some stimulus I end up giving in as its above my abilities (or in some cases not actually possible).

By having these projects its a chance for many people to play around with something without any time limit as such

As for me personally, I dont have any specific areas, I've always found array formulas to be some sort of voodoo so yeah if anyone has any beginner array formula "problems" they want to post then I'd happily have a play on with them.

    Re: Practice projects forum

It would - you wouldn't believe how many threads we'd be having to move because eomeone had posted a genuine question in the wrong place - it would be hugely onerous, but it won't happen anyway.

The most pressing issue for the team at the moment is deciding on new forum software and upgrading to it. Because this forum software is getting old now, this has to take priority. We have a team of one tech guy and one developer behind the scenes, and nobody is paid and nobody's main job is running these forums.

I just don't want you to get your hopes up, that's all.

In any case, there's nothing stopping anyone using old threads with attachments as practice projects, so there isn't really any pressing need for it.
