    Grey (zero value) rep

Seems like we may still have a problem with grey rep.

    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...-indirect.html

In this thread, the OP is shown as having only one post despite having asked a question and thanked me for the solution. So, one post for the question, second post for the reply ... but, either way, he must have had a positive post count when he repped me.

But, no, no increase in rep count and a useless little grey bar. What am I missing? Apart from the rep

TM with the amount of reps you have, are not any extra's wasted anyway lol? (i gave you 1 anyway)

and regarding posts, if i respond to a thread, i get "credit" on my posts (+1), but if i reply again, i didnt think that affected my post count?

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

@FDibbins:thank you for the rep; it more than makes up for the one I "missed"

As a moderator, I guess you can see exactly what my rep count is, should you want to look. And, from that, you can calculate the next nice round number which is my "target". However, as you know, you can answer dozens of questions, and I frequently do, without getting repped. And so it is frustrating, when someone does acknowledge my answer, for it to have zero value. I'm sure that is not what they would have expected or wished to be the outcome.

You will/may be aware from my contribution to previous discussions on the rep system, that I am an advocate ... a fan, even.

With regards to the post count, my understanding is that it will increase by 1 for every question asked, answered, or replied to ... though I stand to be corrected. That excludes specific sub-forums such as the Water Cooler and the Introductions.

Thanks again for the rep; much appreciated

I assume that it's that post count that's the issue - all posts in question forums should count towards the post count, somehow post 1 didn't count (I don't see it on the list of jamesfd's posts), so I presume he repped you before posting thanks....and at that point he was deemed to have a post count of zero hence 0 rep points.

The mystery is why his first post wasn't counted, unless he posted in the Lounge and somebody moved it?

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

    ok, going further off-topic,

i know that some "reps" are worth more than others, I asked 1 of the long-standing mods (and my age, memory fails sometimes, so I cant remember who i asked lol), how that worked, and he kinda/tried to point me in the direction of where to check on that. i never managed to get to where it shows who's "reps" are worth what.

Can any1 pick up and show me where that info is please?

Did I say "Lounge"? - which forum is this? Who am I......?

Apologies, yes, "Water Cooler" - of course I understand the term "Water Cooler" but I've always been firmly opposed to its use in the United States of Britain.

As a mod, you have an admin login ... Look for the sticky in the moderator forum. I think it was started by Teylyn. That tells you how to login. From there, I think you can see everyone's profiles.

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

    @FD,
I believe that was a conversation you and I had.

I'm not going to even try and explain the rep power, because I have no idea why one gets what they get. Maybe because I am a mod I get more, not sure.

Here is what I can say, Trevor, your profile shows a rep power of zero, but I'm going to guess if you rep somebody it will count as one. FD, your rep power is also zero, again, don't know why. I don't really want to get into throwing around numbers, but checked mine and it is greater than zero.

As a test, I gave you some rep Trevor and your reputation level increased by the number shown as my rep power and now you are 58 points shy of a round number.

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

I'm pretty sure my rep power is more than zero. I seem to recall that was one of the things that didn't show up in the profile for some reason.

But thank you very much for the rep. I'm getting there slowly

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

I forget how long ago it was, but there was a thread about rep power and RoyUK explained it. There were complaints about how big some of the numbers were and RoyUK, as Admin, changed the calculation. It has something to do with length of service, post count and your own rep count (I think).

Still don't know why jamesfd's rep power was 0 at the point he repped me.

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

I reckon it's what daddylonglegs said-op posted in the intro forum most likely which doesn't count towards post counts. that got moved to the correct forum-which really ought to increment the post count but perhaps doesn't-then the op thanked you before posting his reply so was still on 0 post count

as best I recall the rep power is usually based on duration of membership, post count and amount of rep received with different factors for each which can be altered by the admin. you can I believe also add modifications to vbulletin to adjust such things further

But the original question still stands: what is the rationality of having the ability to rep someone, if that rep is equal to zero ?

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

I don't think that was the question-the question was why it happened here
the rationale for the rep power is probably just to stop abuse of the system

    Re: Grey (zero value) rep

@JP: agreed, the question was why this specific example and I think I/we know the answer. It probably shouldn't have happened but FDibbins and Jeff have more than compensated so I have nothing to complain about.

I am going to mark this solved. Please can you (FDibbins/Jeff/JP) lock it so that it doesn't generate unnecessary further discussion/debate?

    Regards, TMS
