Note to mods/ admin... Before you lock, can you talk???

    Interesting scenario...

    *** Problem ***

OP started two threads (found out after looking at all his posts) with relatively the same question:

    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...ble-count.html
    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...ble-count.html

The first thread had no responses, but the second thread had already two posts from me. When I came to see if the OP had responded I found that the threads had be locked with no notice of why or by whom. Only after I started digging around did I find out that there was a second sister thread.

    *** Potential solution ***

May I make an suggestion, if you are going to moderate, please explain your decision... leave a message saying that your 'post does not comply with rule number X and that you are locking this thread'. In the case you lock a thread, maybe leave the other open so we can continue to assist the OP. What's the point of locking both threads???

In all fairness, the person who locked the thread might have overlooked the simple need to post 'why' or the threads could have been locked by different moderators/ admin. In the end, I don't know where I should put my response to the OP's question.

Oops sorry abousetta. Actually i locked it and was going to post a reason why. Somehow missed it out.

The threads were closed because the OP also opened the thread in the paid forum. Since you had replied to the thread, i didnt delete it but just locked it.

I will post a reason now.

OK, could you then tell the OP that there is a difference between text and a number. The answer to his solution is to either change the formatting of the look up cell to general or convert it to a number in the Match formula.

    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Arlette,

I know I´m off topic here (and not in harmony with Rule #2) but
The threads were closed because the OP also opened the thread in the paid forum
I can check the WWW but how can I make sure that there is not an identical thread in the paid forum (it may not only come to my mind to be a violation of Rule #5 and maybe even #7), how to handle that? Make TO approach the team in order to close threads in the open area prior to start posting in the paid forum? I´m just being curious.

I understand your point, Holger. Hence, i do check each and every thread entering the CS subforum to see if the user has posted elsewhere in the forum prior to posting here. Its given in red font and in bold in the FAQ but users dont tend to adhere to it.

This creates more problems for us admins and mods but we have to deal with it.
