Excel Forum or My I.E is downloading an attachment with some weird Number

For the last couple of days, when I have tried to download an attachment from Excel forum, the attachment opens with a prefix number followed by the title of the thread. This never happened to me before. I do not know how and why I am getting this weird number.

I do not get it if I use Firefox browser.

I really do not know what this suddenly start to happen and starting to annoy me.

Is it something to do with I.E set up?

If you look at my recent attachments excel books, all have these 12-15 digit number, followed by the title of the thread.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Re: Excel Forum or My I.E is downloading an attachment with some weird Number

Following my Windows Update last week, I found that I.E. 11 had been installed, and I noticed the same thing with attachments (and a few other things not working as they used to, like Canned Replies). I set Compatibility View for this site and the problems have gone away, so maybe that's something to look into.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Pete,
Thank you very much for your help!

    I really appreciate your reply!

I am about to crash my laptop in frustration as no-one seems to listen to my screaming.
I have noticed this behaviour since last week, following updates by MS. I even try to remove some installed files.
Could you please restore my sanity? How do I set Compatibility view?

It's the button that looks like a torn page, just left of the refresh button in the address bar.

I always thought that icon was meant to be a cog, as it is for the Tools menu. If you don't see it, then I think you just hold down the Alt key, and then when you release it the IE menu bar appears and you need Tools | Compatibility View settings, and then Add this website to your (growing) list.

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: One thing I've noticed that I seem to have lost is the little comment that used to pop up if you hover near a poster's reputation bars, but it's no great loss.

    Hi Pete and Shg!
Thank you very much for your help!
I have added this site and tried to download two attachments and seems to work now.
This left me with another question: Why is this site only? I do not have any issue downloading from other sites.

Thanks for the rep, and glad to see you are up and running again.

I've had to do it with a few other sites (not Excel-related or based on vBulletin), and with my previous version I had about 10 sites with that setting, but they are no longer listed, so I'll probably have to set them up again when I next visit them (which is usually once a quarter to get utility and phone bills).

Now some one tells me how to fix it.

I've been having this problem for over a month, might even have started a thread on it.

Anyways I'll give the compatibility thing a try when I get home.

I uninstalled IE11 this morning. It broke my desktop gadgets, and prevented me from signing in to the Outlook Web App.

    shg

    How did you uninstall it?

I searched but the general consensus seemed to be was it wasn't possible.

In W7, Control Panel > Windows Updates > View Update History, click Installed Updates, sorted those by date, and looked for what got installed last night. Saw IE11 and some cats and dogs, and uninstalled IE11.

After rebooting, I set IE to not update automatically.

    Thanks shg!

I've also managed to get rid of I.E11 but not satisfied by only unticking the box for automatic update I've also downloded and installed the tooolkit for disable automatic delivery of IE11.

Will probably not save me from a new Microsoft attack i.e. a sneaky update of I.E12
