I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop about 5 months ago. Really very happy with it. Larger screen, lightweight, and number keyboard like on a desktop. My 4th Dell. I have been happy with them and their customer service.

I am an HP fan - as well as a desktop fan, but my last I7 died (replaced 2 MoBo's, but I think its the processor). I replaced my I7 - and my wife's aging Dell with 2 dell I5 Insprion's. Happy with both, both upgraded to W10, both under $500 from Sams club

    Re: New PC Suggestions solicited

why do you require such beefy specs?

unless you have a rather large monitor or multiple monitors
i5 should be sufficient unless your doing extremely CPU intensive tasks
8g ram is well efficient for normal tasks excluding image or video rendering

    Re: New PC Suggestions solicited

    @xladept
    was referring to ford's system
i think 8 yo machine is definitely time for a new system
the only reason to keep something that old is if you had a ultra customised case you want to keep
everything else should just be replaced just for the sake of compatibility

just recommend something with an SSD boot drive and normal HDD for storage
storage costs are so cheap compared to even 3 years ago...let alone 8

    @ford
    yay capitalism!

i would overkill my system some more too too if the prices werent twice as much

    starting price for Dell Inspiron 3847 I5 4460 - $1099
W10...extra 100 bucks...i though w10 upgrade is free? apparently not if you buy from Dell Australia hahahaha

extra ram...there isnt even a 12g option lol

    Hi Humdingaling,

My Available Physical Memory is a whopping 498.85 MB - so, of course, I'm looking for 64GB of Ram! (tee-hee)

    Re: New PC Suggestions solicited

Well - I bought and installed 2G of Ram (supposedly max for the old PC) - and, it still works!

My wife, the primary user of the old PC, says it seems faster

So, I'm marking this thread solved.

I'd like to thank you all for your input and especially to AlKey for the inspiration to do it myself

    Re: New PC Suggestions solicited

I'm with Alkey on this one. I've been building them just a tad longer than he has. Building your own is the way to go. You pick all the parts, so if something isn't quite right, it's your fault, no one else's lol. The flip side is that if everything is right, then you have the EXACT computer You wanted, You built it, and the feeling is awesome. I build mostly gaming systems and building your own can be way cheaper. For instance - My last build through a reputable (before Dell bought them out) "out of this world" website wanted just under $7,000 for what I wanted. One local place wanted $2600 for the same specs. Another local place (which is where I should have started in the first place, cause I always use them) was $1700 and I got a bigger HD and a better graphics card.
As far as what to get, that depends on what you want to do with it. Gaming? Video and/or audio editing? Excel forum, email and web surfing? If the latter, go with a store bought one from Best buy or Wal-Mart.

Edit* My bad, just saw that this was solved...sorry

You don't have to add Rep if I have helped you out (but it would be nice), but please mark the thread as SOLVED if your issue is resolved.

Re: New PC Suggestions solicited Current thinking??

    Hi

This post is solved, But I thought I would tack on here first, before Starting another Thread...

So I am very stuck in my ways and very cynical about us being “forced” into keeping up to date by those that just wanting to keep selling us stuff.....

But it is time for me to really think about an update now, in terms of a new Computer...
Currently my main computers are Acer Aspires 4810TZG, 7535G, X3200. All with Vistas
My wife has a lot of old LG 120 and LG 110’s with XP and Win 7(Starter Version)
Occasionally I get to use a quite good self made Win 10 64 Bit self made Computer of unknown exact origin. ( I did not make it –I have no idea how to start building my own computer )

I have a lot of Discs with licences available for XL 2007 and XL 2010. ( One Note Book has XL 2003 )

I am not at all up on the current stand.

Any advice would be welcome on suggestions or directions on a good current computer option.

I prefer to stay with XL 2007 and XL 2010. I do not want or need to update there.

I prefer a NoteBook / Laptop with a large Screen. ( But I will mostly use it on the Mains, so how long the Battery stays charged is not too important).

Mostly do Excel, VBA, a bit of Visual Basic, and Email a lot, and search a lot on the Internet

One thing that is important for me is the extended Monitor Option. In XP and Vistas I have that and can, for example have my XL Spreadsheet on a second ( Big Old Telly hanging on the wall ) Monitor and the VB Editor in front of me on my Lap Top. In my Windows 7 do not appear to have that option. ( - assume that is as I have Starter version and / or a failing graphics card “thing” ) I assume it is standard in Win 10, at least on a newer Computer ??
I hope also if I buy a new computer, then the likely pre –installed Win 10 will be stable, not like a lot of the early versions which in Threads here was on average somewhat problematic....

Just now there is a good offer on a couple of Notebooks locally
    HP17–x008ng
    And
    HP15-ac104ng

I know nothing about them... Anyone got any ideas, or opinions on those?

    _......

So any advice at all in any direction would be welcome

    Thanks
    Alan
