How do you deal with sarcasm....

I recently asked for details, and asked for code tags... below is the response: "Thanks for the informative response Arkadi. You can't tell code is code? Here let me fix:"
It was followed by the coded code and the details I asked for... but how does one bite their tongue on this? I did thank him for sarcasm in my next post, and explained code tags are a forum rule. Did I do wrong even adressing the sarcasm in the first place?

In short... badly. I tend to remind those that annoy me (for whatever reason, and usually by PM, as there's nothig to be gained by public admonishment) that we all do this for fun and receive not a cent by way of payment

Yeah Norie... I didn't want to start some silly, public war of words... So aside from 'Thanks for the sarcasm' I just did my best to help.

You can also add this OP to your " Ignore list" and let him ( her) know it publicly.

    Arkadi

I'm not really suggesting you respond with sarcasm.

I've felt like doing that many a time but I always try to rise above it and either ignore the OP, or persevere.

I keep a little punching bag by my desk. That way I can vent my frustration and then try to reply nicely like you did.

Re: How do you deal with sarcasm....

Probably the best way, is to report it to a mod/admin, and let us take care of it.

tbh, I have had times where the OP has got mad at me (most recently because I asked them to add their location), and even gave me neg rep. I ended up saying something like...I did not understand why you would expect me to continue helping when you gave me a neg rep...and ended up saying that hopefully, another member will be able to assist them further. I noticed that no-one else offered to help them.

Bottom line, if some=one gets sarcastic/nasty/rude/whatever, move on, and wish them good luck (if you want). It does no good to give back what you get, in a situ like that

Fair enough FDibbins, and I did think of the reporting option, but I try to be patient, the person joined today, and I thought I should give them a chance to get oriented and better understand our ways. @ nigelbloomy: I may need to get one of those punching bags though... LOL

I fully understand what you mean Just keep in mind, there is no requirement for you to reply, if you dont like them/.what they say/their question/anything at all about them - move on to the next thread, where your help will be far more appreciated

I have noticed that once a member starts getting argumentative, they rarely get further help

And I recently discovered my ability to add custom titles, and in the instance Ford noted above, I not only removed his neg rep, I permanently adjusted the users title.

Hehe, use of the REPORT button to draw a moderator's attention to a user who seems to be forgetting themselves is, IMO, the correct response. No need for you to feel like ANY of your energies need be spent trying to politely corral an impolite user, let us reign them in.

    That is pretty cool Jerry!
As for being hit with sarcasm, unless it is very apparent I can be pretty obtuse, but if I was attacked I would just abandon the post.
Recently I was as PM'd by someone (I won't say who but I consider them a friend) asking me if I found I was becoming grumpy and it floored me, made me question how I come across to others.
I've been pretty lucky only being "attacked" by a member after something like 4-5 posts where I had missed something important the OP noted early in his first post (again being obtuse). I tried smoothing things over with him but he would not acknowledge me after that.

    Hi Sambo,

I had another Guru call me xlinept - I snapped back but later retracted my retort and gave him a lead on a question he had but he never looked at the part in which he would have been interested

Hi xladept, I couldn't imagine posting something like that to anyone, especially a guru! And certainly not on a forum post.

As humorous at it is, I don't think this way of doing is very appropriate.
It looks as if an admin has the (Godly?) right to expose an OP ( however impolite or whatever) to public condemnation and "call him names" publicly.
I suppose lynching has been banned in many countries ( US included), so why reinstate it in a public forum?

This forum has all necessary tools to cope with "problematic" OP's, from warnings to banning ( temporarily or definitively), tools that can be applied to all with the same set of rules.

Haha, too funny guys... love that title change. But... to make it permanent? I suppose that would depend on whether the user continues to be rude or changes his outlook a little?
