Just from personal experience (IT Manager for 20 years). I don't update to a new Windows platform until SP1 comes out. I don't like being a beta tester for Microsoft. Sure, it's "Released", but the past has shown that MS usually has problems with new releases, and it's usually security issues, which can be really dangerous....
Just my 2 sense

Thanks for the response. I sort of thought as much, seeing all these add for a 'Free' upgrade, I thought they were just trying to increase the number of users for what ever reason.

I have upgraded 2 pc's to W10. I have not got into the fancy stuff, but really I don't (yet) really see any difference

That, and I don't see any blindingly obvious issues with it as well like programs not running etc. Although, it did fix the connection to my wireless printer. Previously it keeps failing to detect my wireless printer, especially when I connect to VPNs.

Well, it seems that they're offering the Home edition whereas I have Windows 7 Professional - does it matter?

xladept, they offer it based on your existing version following the table here. In your case, seems like you'll be getting a Pro. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq
Windows10.JPG
Well, I'm down I went for the installation and after an hour or so ended up with a blank screen I don't know what to do now
xladept, just wait. If you click on the "update to W10" icon, it will (should?) tell you its still updating. happened to me, took a day or so with it updating in the background
I shall pray for your safe journey. Ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. May you find enlightenment at the end
I have no Icon to click on - but, thanks Ford for the info.
And, quekbc, thanks for the sky piloting - I think I need it
@xladept
I concur with Ford on the download. it is a long process with the machine rebooting several times. Be patient. Walk away--have an adult beverage.

Hi Alan,
That's the "Finest Kind" of advice (I used to live down east and even worked on a lobster boat)
Yeah, Biff, 11 is my magic number - my birthday is the 11th and I've used the hendecagram for my avatar.
My Biggest critic uses 11 in his handle.
But, meanwhile I have no OS
And, The w10 download (Upgrade) hasn't even asked me my birthday yet
It's going with the hard drive perpetually lit - I'm unenthusiastic - I'll let you know
IMHO, you'd do well to wait until the inevitable bugs are ironed out. If you have a look at MS Answers, for example, you'll see many complaints about Win 10 upgrades trashing Office.
On my PC, running Win 7, MS foisted the Win 10 upgrade on it, because it's NOT an optional update - it's been rolled out as a recommended update and I, like many others, had Windows configured to auto-install recommended updates. So, even though I'd never clicked on the 'reserve your upgrade' button (which I hid anyway), MS tried to download & install it. Over a period of 3 weeks of the installer software trying to do this and failing (for who knows what reason), my system progressively got slower and slower (lots of CPU being chewed up) and all sorts of errors started happening. Finally, the system became unusable (e.g. 10 mins to log in, plus initialization error messages), so I tried to do a system restore. No go - all restore points had been deleted. Worse still, I couldn't even access my PC's recovery partition. So here I am a week later having mostly rebuilt my OS & reinstalled my apps from scratch...
My wife's PC will need a clean install for the same reasons but, because she doesn't use it so much, the Win 10 installer hasn't done so much damage - plus we've killed it.
Caveat Emptor!!!

HI MACROPOD,
I wish that I had seen this post before I acquiesced
Hmm.. I must be real lucky. I've not face any issues so far on my PC running Windows 10. All Excel 2007/2010/2013 seems to be running fine too.
Fingers crossed it stays that way.
IO have not really seen any problems yet either (except, as I mentioned somewhere, excel now and then seems to freeze - BUT this is a brand new PC with a brand new 2013 install, just recently upgraded to W10)
I've been using it for a few months. It has some better features and I need to learn some new ways of getting to the old menus. I've had no problems with Microsoft Office products (mostly Excel) and don't expect any. See an in depth review at:
http://www.cnet.com/products/microsoft-windows-10/
It did take a few hours to upgrade to Windows 10. Be ready to spend a morning upgrading.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

I have been running it for about a month. No issues except it took several hours to install. My only issue is the old Date Picker does not work and I could not get the recommended alternative to work so that I cannot put a date picker in any VBA form.
Still running Ubuntu as smoothly as ever
I let it run all night long - I'm out of luck. I get what I pay for
I spoke too soon - although I thought I'd killed off the Win 10 installer on my wife's PC, I now find its still running (and failing each time) and its apparently trying to do the full 3GB download of Win10 over and over. I have a 9GB/month account (which is more than enough for my normal use by a factor of 2 or more) and in the last day or so, its blown that by 3GB. I'll now be charged $600 (at 20c/MB) in excess usage charges. Thanks for nothing, MS!
I wish the Window that comes up to offer the free installation would F__k off. It comes up non stop on some old Notebooks of my Wife which I know do not meet the system requirements to upload Win 10 anyway
Alan
P.s. - This on its own still puts me off, and that is nothing to do with installation problems..

I've put my machine in the shop - they say they can get me an OS (Windows 7) but, whether they can recover any files or apps (including my Office 2010 Professional +) is up in the air
I remember Paul Lind on Hollywood Squares: When it was suggested that we're all glued together, he said :
"we're all screwed together" - that's the way I feel now. It seems that I can't recover my Office 2010 professional plus because it's been discontinued
Widows upgrades are not always went smooth in the past and often, you could end up with a real mess on your hands. I've used every version of Windows starting from version 3.1 but this upgrade, from 8.0-8.1 to Windows 10 was the easiest one. I really didn't have to a thing and was just sitting and staring at the screen. No input on my part was required so I kind of felt neglected. But after the upgrade was complete, my PC worked great without any issues. However, I did have to do my homework before the upgrade by downloading and installing all available updates from the manufacture's website.

Well, I'm glad for you, AlKey, but I'm still feeling sorry for myself ( I'm used to feeling stupid, so that's no problem)
Hi I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 with no issues infact I have upgraded 3 pc's and all went smooth.
Simply followed instructions and once started let the upgrade run its full course. "Do not interrupt"
Which differed from pc to pc as all have different processing speeds ,left one to run overnight and no issue with any of them.
Once you get used to the navigation of the menu and options then its quite smooth to use.
I'm sure that there are some potential bugs that may be found, and fully expect Microsoft to sort themout.
Thats why everyone pays Microsoft so much for their operating system and other software plus add on apps.
Its the simply a money making upgrade for Microsoft "Smart Cookies!"
I hope you keep your "Toonies" close up tight!
What process did you go through? Just bought my wife a Dell W7 and tried to do teh W10 upgrade - it said I need to upgrade fom W7 to W8 1st
It says it has W8.1 ready to install, but cannot find it anywhere, nor any options for that upgrade. It did come with a DVD for a new W8 upgrade, but the DVD says it is already on the HDD
Hi when I received the notification that my windows 10 upgrade was ready to install I simply followed the upgrade instructions, it did not have to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8. it was a straight upgrade from 7 to 10
have a look at this
http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/softw...ew-licence-key
Thanks for that, I will look at it again when I get home
That's all very well, but:
1) Neither I nor my wife clicked the 'reserve you upgrade' option on either of our PCs.
2) Neither of us was given any choice whether we wanted to upgrade. That is quite unlike any other upgrade we've ever been involved in before.
3) Had I wanted upgrade either PC, I would have downloaded a single iso and upgraded from that, but the Windows update process forces a separate download (no chance to get an DVD from a retailer or use my MSDN subscription to download a copy for either/both).
4) When the upgrade via Windows update fails, it: a) gives no alerts; and b) stupidly re-downloads to whole shebang again, which it has now done multiple times. On my wife's PC, Windows update shows the installation failing 18 times from 6 to 26 August. It hasn't done any more since then because I've reimaged the PC AND turned off Windows update AND disconnected the modem!!!
d) Had I wanted to do an upgrade, I wouldn't have chosen to do it half way through semester with assignments due. I've been up after midnight a number of times lately trying to sort out this mess and get my assignments done.
e) The excess internet usage charges alone are way more than it would have cost me to buy a new laptop...
I can only say that I had to confirm that I wanted the Windows 10 upgrade even right before the I installed it.
At no point did I come across it installing automatically even with the upgrade being requested, it still needed to be authorised by myself. Strange
I do understand about the download costs, however I'm possibly lucky as I have unlimited internet usage and downloads.
Maybe just a quick reminder to another Option Rory suggested for a ""back up" for anyone still "brave enough" to try an instal- ( after all the experience that has been shared here I know I am not, and will avoid it like the Pest )

Well I got it back from the shop. Set up my internet. Plugged in my thumb drive and it died
Your thumb drive died?
Hi Marvin,
No the computer died
Hi Marvin,
I guess you had me pegged. It was the adaptor I'm feeling rather inept now
The reason I asked is - I went to Microsoft a few months ago to get early version of 10. In a big room they were testing the install scripts and had lots of thumb drives that we used to copy the script on our computers, that then was used to install 10 from the net. I was there early and had a problem copying the file from the thumb drive I was given onto my desktop. It turned out to be a bad thumb drive and had nothing to do with the script or my computer. If you had a bad adaptor, it might not be a problem with Win 10 at all. I'm still learning about all the new things the OS does. It looks like they are fixing/changing things frequently, trying to keep up with changes and support old hardware that needs support.
Thanks Marvin for the information. Another possibility is my USB 3.0 drive - that seems to have been obliterated!
Well, I think I'm up The shop was $129.99 and the Download for Office was $99.99. I'll have to find some gainful employment pretty soon
