You get reputation when someone clicks Add Reputation on one of your posts.

Re: How we get reputation points

If you click on Settings you can see how many points you have.

The number of points you get per click depends one who clicks it -- the more reputation they have, the more you get.

You will need to be nominated by another Guru, Moderator, or Administrator. After a period of discussion on your worthiness, capabilities, longevity in the forum, a vote will take place among the Gurus, Moderators and Administrators. It is not an automatic nor is it something that happens indiscriminately. Patience, excel knowledge, persistence and lots of activity are key factors.

Re: How we get reputation points

When you answer another user's question/problem and, hopefully, solve it for them, they may or may not provide feedback. They may or may not say thank you in the thread. And the may or may not add to your reputation by clicking on the Add Reputation button on your post. A typical user will have a "reputation power" of 1, which means YOU will increase your rep count by 1. Some users, for example, Forum Gurus, will have a higher rep power so, if they like your answer, you may get more points.

It takes a while to become a Forum Expert but it is based on the number of posts, number of rep points and, I believe, "length of service". But, eventually, you will get there.

Assuming you continue to answer a variety of questions to a (perceived) high standard, you may be nominated to become a Forum Guru. Then the other Gurus, Moderators and Administrators will discuss the merits of your contribution and vote yes or no. Again, it takes time.

Re: How we get reputation points

The best (and only legitimate, IMO) way to attain Expert status is by focusing on questions and giving quality answers. The Expert/Guru status is not the goal, helping people is the goal. Stated simply, help as many as you can, as accurately as you can muster, for as long as you can. Expert status will come. Guru status isn't even worth discussing, anyone who is "after" it has already missed the point of what it means.

    Hi catchnanan
I admire your enthusiasm to help. Keep it up

IMO the best motivations for the helping on such a Forum are the desire to help people, enjoying answering questions, enjoying teaching, enjoying spreading your knowledge to others, wanting to publicise a solution idea that you think s good, a healthy desire to keep the brain active, learning by answering questions you find a bit on your limit of knowledge , the hate of people that hang on to their bit of knowledge wanting to earn money from it rather than sharing for the benefit of mankind, ......... and finally in a lot of sad cases just a plain addiction to Excel, Lol... !!
Help as much and as often as you are able. Some have people more time than others. As long as you help as and when you are able you will be bestowed the respect by many – maybe that is the best reward rather than some official “level”. I don’t think it does to think too much about the “level” you get to. As Gerry suggested you have lost the point a bit if you want to get to “higher levels”. You will soon get fed up if you are motivated by wanting to achieve some status.
I think some of the most renowned and respected members tend to be a bit oblivious to the whole Rep system. They often have the highest levels such as Moderator or Administrator “afflicted on them”. I think they rarely ask for it. ( The odd one or two on a “power trip” usually end up alienating everyone.. Including themselves.. )

Having said that I Rep a lot. I lurk a lot and when I benefit from some solution I will give a Rep, but is just intended as a bit of feedback.... or a convenient way to say hello to someone whos efforts you respect ..

But please do not stop your enthusiasm. That is worth a lot. Just possibly have another think about your motivations..
