    POLL : Email Service Providers

Please take a minute (if that) to complete an anonymous survey regarding EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDERS.

The survey is on Survey Monkey - completely anonymous - a professional survey website.

The survey will run for a week or so.

Results will be reported back to the FORUM.

    Thank you.

ps: I believe "The Water Cooler" is the appropriate place for this post ? If not, please advise and maybe a moderator can move it ?
If this is inappropriate for some reason ( I was advised otherwise), please let me know and I can delete the post.

I have done your survey, but from the questions asked, I can't see that we are going to learn very much from the results. What is your purpose for doing it?

Email Service Providers and such cool Water Cooler stuff :) - What do you use, and why?

Since starting with computers a few years back, I found the free German Telekom Email adequate. I think that is the most common one used here, but I expect Gmail , like most Google stuff, will “take over”. I reluctantly got a Gmail account as it seemed the only way I could register with a few things. I don’t use it much – I just have it set to redirect everything to my Telekom account. So the redirection possibility is the best thing about Gmail for me.

I have often wondered what people find the advantages of using a Email provider that you must pay for. I suppose it is mostly better virus and spam protection ??

I do not have a lot of experience with different providers. It would be interesting to hear other people’s opinions.

Apart from the obvious communication, I find Email a good way to store and get at stuff. ( For things like codes which I do not mind sharing, then the Forum is good for that, I find )

One thing that did catch me out initially with my Telekom account was that I did not notice that the default setting was to delete all the stored Emails after a few Months, so I lost a lot of stuff. But I re set that to never delete stuff, then all was well.

I store loads of stuff like that in internet. I have backups somewhere, but I usually find it a lot quicker to find my stuff where I have deposited around the net !

Please suggest questions for a follow up survey. What areas on the same topic would be of interest ?

For me it's ability to use custom domain name. It's useful for business email (be it personal business or larger). Along with fine tuning security etc.

These days, major email service provider (Exchange Online, Gmail etc) has added business applications that comes with email subscription. Which is very handy for a business. But for personal use, any free email account is mostly adequate.

None, really - it's of little or no consequence to me, to be honest, but I did the survey as I thought you'd want a representative sample, including those like me who couldn't care one way or the other as long as it's free. You still haven't told us what the purpose of the survey is - what are you trying to prove?

Re: POLL : Email Service Providers

Something changed on their website. There used to be a check mark circle in front of the last text box for question 10. Now it's gone. Sorry.

I modified the question with different instructions and tested the survey.

It should work for you now.

    Thanks.

Here is the survey result. I draw no conclusions other than GMail seems to be preferred by those responding.

Hmm, so most people use GMail, but no one would recommend it? Like Google, I find it difficult to live without even though I do not like it
But I expect not too many people have taken part in the survey.. shame

I would be interested if anyone has experience with something like a standard free British Telecom Email. In Germany I think the free equivalent t-online.de from German Telekom is still just about the standard that everyone knows about. ( They were attacked really badly from a hacker early in the year and for up to a week a lot of people had not internet or telephone in Germany, but caught it in time and in doing so coincidentally prevented the hacker wiping put most of the Internet in USA – apparently the hacker “practiced first” in Germany )

One thing that I find a shame is that a year or so ago they changed something, and now copying from WORD to Email looses most format. – I used to be able to copy pretty things into the t-online.de – just for fun personal stuff mostly. I can’t do that anymore. I just tried that with Gmail and it works....Ahh...Bingo! - So I just found a workaround as I only use Gmail to redirect to my Telekom account anyway ( - I only have Gmail as it is the only thing I seem to be able to register at some places with ) ..... I paste in Gmail, and I have it Format preserved in my Telekom In Box

So as often, something gained by preparing a Forum Post – I was going to ask if anyone else knows how to paste pretty colours into my Telekom Editor – solved it myself, Thanyous ( Shame it does not work with the Forum Editor ... or maybe not ...

    Alan

EDIT: If I copy and paste from a Forum Post into my telekom window... low and behold it maintains formatting - even more strange then, that it does not work from word...

Ha! It raises a fair question, though. How big was the sample size, ultimately?
