Congratulations on your promotion! Please don't bother with an animated avatar: they are at best distracting and at worst nauseating.

    I agree!!!
Be fore warned, I regularly post drunk. So don't take offence (too much) to what I say.
    I am the real 'Napster'

According to the window where you can upload the avatar...
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 200 by 200 pixels or 195.3 KB (whichever is smaller).
I will also check with mngt to see if that restriction still applies with the new server we are on

Animated Avatars. Anyone with one want to let us in to the secret how to??

It would be interesting if someone who actually has an Animated Avatar working could explain for computer idiots like me how they did it..

If you lurk Threads on this or ask different people , then you get different figures for the maximum pixels and / or file size. It probably varies a bit and we would never know if was changed from time to time. So we can only have an approximate idea on that, I expect.
I have been told 250 x 100 px and no more than 19.5 kb by someone ( Forum Expert) that has one working.
Ford ( Admin )sees 200 by 200 pixels or 195.3 KB (whichever is smaller) where you upload the Avatar
I ( Forum Expert) see 50 by 50 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller) where you upload the Avatar
Others tell me they saw 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5KB somewhere but forgot where

I had a lot of fun getting my normal Avatar up some time ago. Others did too. It took me a year and the given limits often did not tie up with what I got to work. Some computer knowledgeable people never got theirs to work. Many found it very easy. So there is little consistency here.

    _............

So I thought I would have a go with a gif...
    I did this: http://bfy.tw/BWlR

Then went randomly to a site
    https://giphy.com/gifs/internet-welcome-iYDlg0CljYqTm

Clicked randomly on a GIF Link and copied it
    https://media.giphy.com/media/xThuWa...irYs/giphy.gif

    I pasted it in here:
    DumpTrump.JPG http://imgur.com/GHN5Jrn
    Sucuri chucked up an error.

    Tried a shortened link
    http://gph.to/2pNolyk
    I got invalid File InvalidLink.jpg http://imgur.com/FRt6xlV

    I tried in German, http://bfy.tw/BWlj

They all talk about putting the link inside the Image BB Code Tags. If you do that in this Sum Forum, then it will work. This, for example, will produce a Donald Trump video in a post in the Sub Forum that we are in now. Post the following and then the video appears:
    [IMG]https://media.giphy.com/media/xThuWaTkR7RexairYs/giphy.gif[/IMG]
I just edited my post #16 and put it in.... ( https://www.excelforum.com/the-water...ml#post4642146 )
It will not work in Sub Forums where the [IMG] code is Off
    IMGcodeisOff.jpg http://imgur.com/bNDOZBH

    ???????????
    I did not give up..
I just googled until I found a .gif...
    https://giphy.com/gifs/90s-pixel-pixels-ao9DUiTKH60XS
I right clicked and copied the Picture
    CopyGif.jpg http://imgur.com/5odEq5m
I have no idea where that went or what that did...

I double clicked on that Picture , and it gave me an option to download. So I did
    DownloadGif.jpg http://imgur.com/3deuQ7u

I looked at it where it downloaded ( on my desktop )
    GifOnMyDesktop.JPG http://imgur.com/JHRCp1a
I tried uploading that: ( Option 2 – Upload Iamge From
    UploadGigf.JPG http://imgur.com/VSC39wL
Well it worked .. sort of... It is there but it does not move...
    DeadGif.JPG http://imgur.com/0o60Qst

Inspired I thought I would have another go at that Trump Video. Googled a Gif on him drawing a pretty picture of a Cat, ( he is very clever, he can do that ) , and i double clicked on it and downloaded it:
    DownloadTrump.JPG http://imgur.com/5dlgV72
    It looks a bit big
    DownloadedGif.JPG http://imgur.com/W3HdIv0
It almost worked.. I got a preview of it, _..
    BigBoyTrumpAlmostWorked.JPG http://imgur.com/auW1u4I
_.. but on hitting Save Changes , I got upload failed ( It never showed on my Avatar in a Post )
    UploadFailed.JPG http://imgur.com/oik8tmj
I thought it might error as it is he is a bit big, BigBoyTrump.

I had a play in Windows Movie Maker
    WindowsMovieMaker.JPG http://imgur.com/TPR3DRA
    TrumpMoviemaker1.JPG http://imgur.com/4y3W7Xl
I don’t really know what I am doing but somehow I managed to save just a bit of that video
    CutdownTrump.JPG http://imgur.com/eenDdtB
But I had to change the extension back to .gif
    CutdownTrumpgif.JPG http://imgur.com/iAsMt3e
    MSWMMgif.jpg http://imgur.com/74Pknlf

I tried to upload that... It said invalid File ???
    But it accepted it !!!
And it is there !!!! But it he does not move
    ?????????????
So not bad ... I got a big gif, made it small and uploaded it....
Trump is there... but he doesn’t move
    DeadTrump.JPG http://imgur.com/eexl0ol
So It does not seem to “work” ....

It looks like his size is not the issue. Size appears not to be the issue ***( At least we can find a small one or crop one down a bit - if i can , then anyone can ) . Maybe the Avatar from Imran and my Trump gif just needs to be enabled/ switched on ???

Can anyone who has done it enlighten us how they did it ( In English preferably )??

*** EDIT: Size does come into it , but it is not quite that straight forward.. see later posts - https://www.excelforum.com/the-water...ml#post4643577

Hm, I don't know why your avatar doesn't work because I don't know how you do that.
You can try with this : (as test) cseanim.gif (50x50, 3.58 kb)

    edit:
Your current avatar is NOT animated gif but gif only

    Hi
Most were for images . I tend to use imgur.com for that .. because
_ Normal Image uploads are limited in number.
_ Normal Images are a bit big here and swamp the post.
_ Just force of habit – most places I post do not have an upload Image facility

Re: How to upload an animated avatar

    One problem I see is:
    - you've animated gif (eg. trump)
    - you need to resize it to correct dimension (eg. 50x50 and size ca. 19.5 kb)
    so far so good
now you resize and save as gif of course but you must save it as animated gif so you need software which can do it for you.

I sent you a small list of software so download trial version and try with.

The attachment I post here is example which works well, so you can save it (right click and save image as...) then try with your avatar if it will be "dancing" gif or not.

You can see this attachemnt as my avatar now.

btw. nothing of your avatars is animated gif but normal gif

ani.gif (50x50px, 10.9 kb - can be used as example for testing avatar)

So possibly the confusion arises as “If gif is very big, it may still be uploaded but works as a normal Avatar. If gif is close to the limit, Sucuri pukes up. If gif is a bit too big it errors and tells you that it is a bit too big”

I will try now that from sandy and snb ... and see if I can get Imran’s to work

Re: How to upload an animated avatar

Animated gif has limitations here (Sucuri (dimension probably) or too big size)
Your Pooh is animated now (avatar)
But this is too small to see animation with details.
I see something jumping but if I want to see what is on your picture there I need zoom it but if I do that it seems very blured

Re: How to upload an animated avatar

the same rocket, non-animated (yours) and animated (mine)
I think source is the same

    anirocket.gif (50x39px, 18.7 kb)

I remove rocket from avatar because I don't want rocket there

Re: How to upload an animated avatar

So:, I think we have it
All from Sandy and snb work for me as animated avatar.
And I am happy now that I can get there now after a bit of Poohing about

As for the original from Imran.....
So his original uploads , but is not animated, even though it is a.gif

    So reduce it in size:
ResizeRocket50x50.JPG http://imgur.com/re2iDkS I get error ??? “Your file of 40.6 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype”.
How about as Normal Image upload:

    _......

So keep reducing in size, and try to get it in my Avatar:

    30x30 Pixels
    ResizeRocket30x30.JPG http://imgur.com/5anl2Xw
    I get Sucuri Error !!!!!

    I try again 25x25 Pixels
    ResizeRocket25x25.JPG http://imgur.com/wEyUgHa
    I get Sucuri error !!!

    I try again 20x20 Pixels
    ResizeRocket20x20.JPG http://imgur.com/hEfYi3U
    I get Sucuri again !!!

    _..
    Etc....... etc....

Finally I had to go down to 5x5 Pixels
    ResizeRocket5x5.JPG http://imgur.com/gughanf

Try a few odd, dimensions, not a great deal of difference in results..

So it works but might be too small to be of much use

So the conclusion is along the lines....
If your .gif is much too big it will likely upload but will be unanimated.

After that it is a bit varied.
Eventually as you keep reducing in size, you should find a size small enough that will work.

The Sucuri error is probably because something is not set up right.
You will need to experiment a bit with different gifs, until you find one that will still look big enough to be readable , but which will also upload

    EDIT:
Sandys rocket works for me too – How strange
    Try some different dimensions
    W50h39 = 14.53KB – still sucuri
    W39h50 = 15.52KB – still sucuri
    weird

download Sandy’s and resize ( a resize site I found https://ezgif.com/resize ) w50h40 – KB goes to 36.96 strange ( and error Your file of 37.0 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype. )

    Edit: Resize Imran’s site
    Resize Imran by his site ( http://gifmaker.me/resizer/ ) for 50x50 (5kB) - works
Resize Imran site I can get up to 70x70 ( 8k) before Sucuri pukes up at 9Kb for 80x80
But 70x70 ( 8k) is then not animated
Resize Imran Site 60 x60 6kB also works but not animated
Resize Imran Site 50 x 50 and is animated

Clearly a bit of fiddling around necessary, But get there in the End:

    Once again
Question:__ How to upload an animated avatar
Answer: Assuming you are entitled: ( https://www.excelforum.com/forum-rul...rum-rules.html Valued Forum Contributor : 120 days registered and 300 posts and 150 reputation points...you will be able to upload an animated avatar. )
Try a size likely to be a bit too big: Assuming it either does not upload or is uploaded as non animated, proceed as follows:
Try a few sites out to resize the gif, gradually reducing in size ( https://ezgif.com/resize http://gifmaker.me/resizer/ ) Fiddle around until you get a size which both comes out animated and also is of a size and dimensions to be as readable as you would like.. )

Re: How to upload an animated avatar

    You are welcome

btw. Standard tools from windows cannot be used for animated gif.
You will need special software (special is too big word I think ) to do that.
I wont list here any software because I'm not sure if this is in line with forum rules
