You Received An Answer - Now What ?

Whether the answer you receive solves your issue or it doesn't ... it is rude to ignore
those who volunteered to assist you.

Let the volunteers know if their assistance was successful or not. DO NOT simply 'walk
    away' and not respond.

Participation in a FORUM is the same as having a face to face conversation. How would you
feel if the person you are having a conversation with suddenly walked away without saying
    anything ?

    Dude ... don't be rude.

It does leave somewhat of a vacuum, but many of the first time posters simply do not know how to respond or how to navigate around the forum site. I remember that it took me a while and I still haven't learned all the things available on the site in all the years I have been using it. But I do agree, that if they know how to respond, they should do so, and if they don't know, they should explore the site and learn how to do it, They can't break anything because the application will prevent that.
Any code provided by me should be tested on a copy or a mock up of your original data before applying it to the original. Some events in VBA cannot be reversed with the undo facility in Excel. If your original post is satisfied, please mark the thread as "Solved". To upload a file, see the banner at top of this page.

Let's not make excuses for those who can't be bothered to acknowledge the help they receive here: there are too many what I would refer to as "smash and grab" threads here, and it's a sad reflection on modern society where it's pretty much all take and no give. If a new member can get here easily enough to ask a question and navigate back to use the help they get, then they can say "thank you". It's as simple as that.

Re: You Received An Answer - Now What ?

I try to close threads I participate in, one way or another

The best outcome is I get thanked, I get +rep, and the thread is marked solved. My response to that is
"You're welcome. Thanks for the rep. "
If I get thanked, with or without +rep, but the thread is NOT marked Solved, my reply is
    "You're welcome. "
    followed by
"If you are satisfied with the solution(s) provided, please mark your thread as Solved.

    New quick method:
Select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Solved. To undo, select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Unsolved.

Or you can use this way:

How to mark a thread Solved
    Go to the first post
    Click edit
    Click Go Advanced
Just below the word Title you will see a dropdown with the word No prefix.
    Change to Solved
    Click Save

You may also want to consider thanking those people who helped you by clicking on the little star at the bottom left of their reply to your question."
If I hear nothing for a while, particularly for a thread I have put some effort into, I will check the OP's profile and see when they were last logged in. If they've logged in since I provided a solution, I will ask the question,
    Is this resolved now?
Worse, if they've logged in and the thread is marked Solved, I will wax lyrical about courtesy, etc. A while since I’ve done that though so maybe I’ve been lucky.

Having said all that, I totally agree with you. If people can find their way to this or other fora, ask a question, and come back for the answer, the should provide feedback and thanks.

I should have mentioned, you have given me +rep at least three times over the past couple of months for solutions I have provided for you. So, thanks for that ... that's the way it should work

Re: You Received An Answer - Now What ?

I am 100% in agreement that the rules should be followed and members should mark their threads as solved when the issue has been satisfied. A thank you is well appreciated and reps are a bonus. Like TMS, I try to respond cordially to those who follow the rules and are courteous enough to offer thanks and add reps. But I have not always been able to write code and formulas when I needed them and I remember the frustrations and obsessions very well. It is not making excuses for those who forget, just facing reality. I can forgive those who don't say thanks or forget to mark their thread as solved. What I cannot forgive are those who think they are entitled to free consulting service here and are rude in their attitude toward those trying to help them. I think we all want to help the members who ask for it. Let's hope they learn to show some courtesy while they also learn how to use Excel.

    .
I understand and have experienced each of the scenarios all of you have described in your posts.

My overall desire (I believe it is your desire as well) is to simply have the OP acknowledge the assistance they have received. I participate here and other forums to assist others with
the little bit of knowledge I have concerning VBA. My reward is the satisfaction knowing I've helped someone. The "REPUTATION" points are nice but not mandatory for me.

If a volunteer has provided an answer to your problem and it works .... let the volunteer know. If the answer doesn't completely answer your question/s, let the volunteer know that as
well. There are threads where I (and others) have purposely asked the OP did the answer work ... does it require adjustment ... was there anything else that the OP required. And
all that is received from the OP is 'dead air' ... no response ...

Some societal norms may have changed BUT ... Right is still Right and Wrong is still Wrong. Mind your manners and let the volunteer know if their assistance worked or did not work.

This site has been too valuable to me on too many occasions for me NOT to show appreciation. I try to add rep to any and everyone that responds to my invariably inane threads whether their answers help or not.

Re: You Received An Answer - Now What ?

Is not responding rude? Yes without a doubt.
The question I now have to ask me is "What's my response to that?)

I agree wholeheartedly with "say you are welcome". So thank you for that Trevor.

Sadly, I find that I often overlook that as well outside the forum.
Wife having thanked me for something: "David J. I believe the words you are looking for are "You're welcome "." I too often need to be called on that. She's a good coach, and I like that about her --- sometimes. (LOL ) If I'm failing to do that at home I am probably failing to do it here as well.

Also something I picked up from Ron Coderre: He will often close a post prompting for response --- "Does this do what you want?" --- or similar.
I find that I am more likely to get response if I do the same. On occasion I will post "What am I missing?" These don't always work though I find the difference in feedback noticeable.

The gist of this is I seem to get more of what I feed. (Try putting food out for that stray cat on the back porch and watch the "fun". )

Sadly it's the world we live in to a large degree, and yes that is no excuse. It's a fact I have to deal with while remaining sane and "in bounds" myself.

Dominic, thank you for that. Thank you everyone who is posting to this thread.
And --- Logit, thank you for starting it.

Does any of this help anyone?
If not what am I missing? ()

“Is that something you can work with?”

    I think that’s Ron’s catch phrase.

Sadly, I’ve had one of those days. At least four of the people I’ve helped today left without giving any feedback whatsoever. Just an acknowledgement that the solution offered had worked would have been enough. Ho, hum!

It is nice to leave feedback so others can come along and see if the solution actually worked.
