    Vertical & multi-row sheet tabs?

I've done something a bit silly. I spent a lot of time creating a product without speaking to heaps of users beforehand...Anyway, here is me asking you now...I know, a bit late in the game to ask that, but please let me know if you have any suggestions or advice.

I've created an Excel add-in that enables multi-row and vertical sheet-tabs in Excel: FormulaDesk Navigator. You can also filter the displayed sheet tabs by color as well as custom tags (that you can define).

Why? Because Excel files with many sheets are a pain to work, endless scrolling to get to sheets...

It's currently in public beta testing, but that is about to end.

What I really want to know is: is this useful to you in your daily work? Please let me know if you have any ideas for how to improve it to be something that YOU would find extremely useful...or even if you think that I've wasted years of my life ;-)

I can't add a link, but search Google for "FormulaDesk Navigator" or try this: formuladesk[dot]com/formuladesk-navigator/

By the way, I sincerely hope that this post doesn't seem spammy, because it's not meant to be - I'm desperately seeking feedback.

    Thanks,
    Gareth Hayter.

Sounds interesting (as long as you dont intend pushing this thing for sale here)

I will move it to a more appropriate forum though.

    Hi Gareth,

I needed to look at your tool and see what you are trying to do. When I see a multi sheet workbook, I right click on the arrows just to the left of the first (left most) tab and a list of all sheet named drops down. I can then select a sheet name from that list and activate it. I've also had questions about creating a sheet that hyperlinks to other sheets. You can certainly find the code to build a table of sheet hyperlinks. If I had an excel table of hyperlinks, I could sort and/or filter it by the ones I wanted and double click on the name to take me to that sheet. There must be some applications that demand lots of sheets but I try to move people to better structured single sheet tables to do most of their work. Also, now that Power Query is available and can bring in multiple files from a single folder, I'd sell that feature instead of more tabs.

I've written hundreds of hours of apps also that never made it to the masses..

    Hi Marv

Thanks for taking the time to look and give feedback. I agree, there are many ways to accomplish things in Excel. I've tried to create something that makes navigation super easy. I've taken a lot of direction from the suggestions and votes on the Excel Uservoice website, where users ask for a feature and other users vote for it. I've used these as my guiding light.

Anyway, I'll keep plugging away...I've had quite a few sales already (of the beta version), so I just need to try to find more similar users!

What are you referring to regarding Power Query and for me to 'sell that feature'? Which feature of my add-in are you referring to?

    All the best,
    Gareth.

Gareth, based on your last post (#4), it seems that this intended to become a commercial product?

If so, then Im all for members here beta-testing for you, but please do not make any attempt to try and push sales of your product here - that could result in an instant ban. As this is a free-help forum (albeit with a very small Commercial Services forum), Im sure you can understand all assistance offered here is completely free.

    Hi FDibbens

Yes, it is intended to be a commercial product, but I am not seeking to advertise or sell...I'm just trying to get help/direction/feedback/advice/suggestions from those who are way more knowledgeable than myself.

I'm not even asking anyone to perform beta-testing, just feedback on whether my thoughts about the needs of real-world users match reality.

Is there somewhere better to discuss these types of issues?

    Many thanks,
    Gareth.

PS: I apologize if I've caused any problem - that's certainly not my intention.

Re: Vertical & multi-row sheet tabs?

    Hi Gareth,

Power Query is a newer feature that was an Add-In for 2010 excel and now a standard tool in 365. It has the ability to pull in multiple files and accumulate the data in a single sheet. There is a "In this Folder" tool in PQ that I use and would use instead of multiple tabs like your product. Read about it at: https://www.myonlinetraininghub.com/...-from-a-folder

Here is how I use it....
I get monthly bank statements in pdf format from my bank. I use Foxit and convert these to .txt files and save these in a single folder. I open my Excel workbook that has a PQ script and do a Refresh All. It pulls in all .txt files and filters the data to only show transactions in the bank account. By adding a new .txt file to the folder and then clicking a single button I accumulate multiple files into a single table. I think your tool would want to keep each monthly statement in a separate tab. Data in a single table is much more useful in my example.

    Time to learn Power Query?

    Hi Marv

Thanks very much for the info and the link. It's always interesting to see how others use Excel - there's almost an infinite number of usage scenarios and approaches.

I like your approach - it's nice and clean and works well for you. I'll add it to my bags of tricks and pull it out when appropriate.

    All the best,
    Gareth.

Nope, no problem at all, as long as we understand each other, it's all good
