Cross Posting

Good ay to all readers here

As one who ran foul of the ruling this week, may I suggest to all mods that they look at the rules please.
There is NO time frame to guide anyone in which someone is required to cross post.
I thought I would have had a few hours being allowed due to domestic of business situations to do the cross post.

3. Questions that are cross-posted to other web forums must contain links to those posts on those forums or a comment to tell us where else the question has been asked. (A, Z*, Z#)
A. Moderator will edit title or add VBA code tags or add / remove links for new members and admonish and require compliance for more experienced members.
Z* As Z with the exception that repeat offenders will be given an infraction.
Z# A reasonable time allowed is 4 hours. ( This is just my Suggestion)

Thank you for looking
Peter
One I have learnt over the last few months, " You are NEVER too old to learn ".
Sometimes I forget to say " Thank You " for your assistance, so here I say " A BIG Thank You. "

Re: Cross Posting

Peter, thanks for bringing this up.

Sorry, there is no lee-way on this. If you post elsewhere, I see no reason at all to delay pasting the link to that x-post.

You know you have x-posted - you know you need to provide the link...post the links. Simple as that.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Re: Cross Posting

Hey Peter,

I work for free and hope I'm helping people with questions. If you cross post and have your answer somewhere else, I'm wasting my time in trying to help you. We don't like cross posting because there are lots of people to help who really need answers without working with people who are playing us off others.

Does that make sense?

Re: Cross Posting

As Ford says, and as I have said before, if you cross post elsewhere, then the first thing you should do is declare it here. There is no justifiable reason for any delay: it is just a simple copy and paste of a URL, after all.

If you want to continue getting help here, then you need to play by the rules that exist, which are perfectly reasonable as they stand. We are not going to change them for you.

Re: Cross Posting

Hi Marvin Thank you for your reply.

Because I ran foul of some Mods this week I thought I would request a review of the rules, but of the replies
so far there is NO lee-way in time to repost cross links.

I am as they say at the eleventh hour of completing my Horse Endurance program, when I did not get any
takers to my request for some vba help, a friend suggested to cross post, however there is nothing happening
there either. So I about thinking of abounding the whole project. ( I AM NOT ASKING for your assistance)

Good Morning ALi

I can't undo what is in the past just learn from it.

I DO NOT or EXPECT any preferential treatment, I wanted to see if the rules are open for interpretation and review.

Re: Cross Posting

They are always open for review, but only if the review is reasonable and would be of benefit.

Your request is not reasonable: it would leave a four-hour window during which someone might waste their time helping you here or wherever else you have posted without realising that you have had a solution elsewhere. The rule is as it is for a perfectly sound reason.

Peter

Please read the link Pepe has posted. All fora have this rule - not just us. The link should make it plain why we (and others) have this rule.
We are even reasonable about it : The rule isn't "Don't cross post", the rule is "Let us know if you do".

Please familiarise yourself with the rules before posting. You can find them here.

Yes, all fora have this rule, and Pete is asking us over at OzGrid to review it there as well because he fell foul of it (because a friend told him to cross post).

Re: Cross Posting

Things never happen simultaneously. However time delays should be as short as possible. Someone posts something, here. If, subsequently (minutes, hours, whatever) they decide to cross-post elsewhere, it will take some time to set up the post on the other site. Once that is done, and a URL is available, I don't see any reason why the cross-posting cannot be completed in a matter of seconds on BOTH sites.

Many threads are solved within 4 hours. You could easily have 2 separate answers on the cross-posted fora, with each set of contributors blissfully unaware that your problem was a) being addressed by someone else and b) that one of them had wasted their freely-given time.

Freely-given time is valuable (at least to me). All we ask is that users here don't abuse it.

Re: Cross Posting

Personally I couldn't give a monkey's about cross-posting, and I do not see why people get so agitated about it. Sure it is nice if someone des provide a link, but if they don't, does it matter? Sometimes I will post that a question is cross-posted, but never suggest that all help should cease until they conform. No-one suffers a mortal injury because of it, no-one is libelled, no-one is violated in any way, so can't we just relax about it and jut accept it. Some of these people might be selfish in their attitude and couldn't care, but I bet the majority are just trying to get the job done and they have heard that forums are wonderful places where many talented people are giving their time for free. And then they join and can be hit with a tsunami of bureaucracy. Personally, I think that the action of stopping any else from helping to answer until they conform to what I consider to be arbitrary rules is worse than the crime they are accused of, but that is just me, I don't make the rules. You can't cross-post but you can spam us as much as you like .

I give my time on this and other forums for free, and the reason I do it because I know there are people out there who have a project that they need to complete, probably don't have enough time to do it properly, and are saddled (blessed) with using a tool that they know (because we tell them) is incredibly flexible, but one they probably don't know how to fully use. I was in a similar position and found help from real giants, like Chip Pearson, John Walkenbach., John Green, Stephen Bullen, Rob Bovey, Dave Henderson, Tom Ogilvy, Myrna Larson, Debra Dalgleish, now it's payback time. I get a kick out of solving problems I haven't encountered before, but it is just as nice to rattle off yet another (my 15,271st) SUMPRODUCT solution when you know it solves a problem.

I don't do it for thanks, so I won't be offended if you don't bother, I don't do it for the reps, I don't even know what the point of them. I do it primarily because I want to and it satisfies me, and also in the hope someone who asked the question gets help, and better still, someone might even google a topic one day and finds my posting answers their question (I have even found previous posts of mine answering a question for me!).

At worst, cross-posting is an inconvenience, that is how it should be treated in my view. As for saying it is wasting our time that is nonsense. When someone posts a link, do you really follow that link then read all of the posts to see if it has been answered and you have nothing to add. I don't and I bet I am not alone in that. No, it is we that are the ones wasting our time, and if we don't want to do that we should maybe get a life. Personally, I am happy with what I do, what I give.

Re: Cross Posting

Bob - we all give freely of our time. We all get a kick out of helping people. Some of us have been appointed moderators to make sure that the rules (which were reviewed only a year ago) are upheld.

You don't have to agree with the rules, but you do have to follow them. Posting links is a necessary courtesy, in my view, and your comment about new members is quite wrong: if a new member falls foul, we provide the link or links for them. It's the same with other rules - newcomers are told what the rule is, but we put it right for them so that they can get on with getting help. However we do expect them to conform in future posts.

We as a moderation team do not allow SPAM: we get rid of it on sight or when it it reported. There is at least one other thread running on it which I advise you to read: it explains what has been done to combat SPAM and how the tech team and the site's owner have failed to engage in getting the problem sorted. In short, beyond what we do already, our hands are tied.

I don't and I bet I am not alone in that.
Probably not, but those who DO follow the links are not alone, either, and for every one of you there is one of them.

Re: Cross Posting

I can't get excited about code tags and thread titles and thread hijackings, etc, tbh. But undeclared cross posts get right up my nose. I'm only here for shortish periods of time. Whilst here, I want to help those that need help, not those who already have had a solution elswehere.

It's rude and an abuse of my time.

I know that Ali, I don't control anything, and I don't want to control anything, so I follow the rules, or I try to. Doesn't mean I agree with them (all). I have been on newsgroups and forums for over 20 years, far longer than the vast majority of people around her or the other forums, I just don't see why we bother even caring about such a trivial matter.

I also know that it is not the moderators allowing spam, I have seen the various declarations about same, I am just amazed that the forum allows all that garbage, and then spends so much energy on a lesser matter.

Then they have made that choice, why complain when there is no link to follow and so no time taken up?

Re: Cross Posting

We shall have to respectfully agree to disagree. I have also been a member of various fora for well over 20 years, although I have only been on Excel boards for about six. I do not fully agree with all of the rules, but I have to go with the consensus when they are discussed (as they were a year ago when we reviewed them - a LOT of time went into that review).

And I hate the use of fora, English has evolved and the normally accepted consensus is to use forums in everyday speech, fora seems to be reserved for dry academics .
