Check out this video of Catherine Destivelle. I remember seeing this free climb of hers in Mali about 30 years ago and it scared me to death just watching. In particular see the stuff around 4 minutes into the video

I think it's crazy. People think that their life belongs only to them and they can use it as they want. And their parents, how they feel at this point. That's real selfishness.
Well, it does, and they can.
Yes, it's extremely selfish, but as parents we have to accept that we don't bring children into the world to be owed anything by them: what our children choose to do with their lives is entirely their choice. I'd be horrified as a parent, but it sort of goes with the territory, I guess: we choose to be parents, not the other way around.

We can only raise our offspring to make responsible choices. Once they are no longer "under my roof, my rules", they are entitled to make their own choices. If they decide they want to sleep on the side of a 500 ft drop, or prefer the same se.x partners or want to go deep see diving with sharks, or want to catch deadly poisonous snakes bare-handed (me), that is up to them, and all we can do is hope they use common sense and take whatever precautions they can
Of course, children have freedom. It seems to me that true love and respect for their relatives is manifested in thinking about their interests first, not about what I want. Perhaps a family where selfishness thrives cannot be strong.
