Equation to calculate distance of 2 points on 2 different planes

    Hi Everyone ,

Could you please help on the geometry math ( see attached image) :
    I have 2 plane (ABCDEFG) and (A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1 G1)
    I have x,y,z for A,B,C,D,E,F,G where is z=0
    I have x,y,z for A1,B1,C1 which are AA1#BB1#CC1
All lines AA1,BB1,CC1,DD1,EE1,FF2,GG1 are perpendicular with plane (ABCDEFG)
How do I find the distance of DD1,EE1,FF1 and GG1 ?
Is there a equation for it ?

    Thanks in advance !

    Mark

You will need to tell us the equation you would use to work it out and then we can help you to convert it to an Excel formula. This is an Excel forum, not an equation forum.

There may be, but that's not what the forum was set up for.

I've moved the thread out of the Excel forum, as it is not an Excel query.

Re: Equation to calculate distance of 2 points on 2 different planes

As it's already in water cooler:

I assume that D1 E1 etc are in the same plane as A1 B1 and C1. If not - we cannot do anything about it.
If you have all coordinates of A1, B1 and C1 you can "draw" two wectors A1B1 and B1C1 and their vector product will be the vector perpendicular to A1B1C1 plane. if this vector is say [m,n,o] then each point on the plane perpendicular to this vector and passing through A1 (x0,y0,z0) will obey:
    m(x−x0) + n(y−y0) + o(z−z0) = 0
so z will be (as we remember z0 is 0)
    = -(m(x−x0) + n(y−y0)) / o

to implement it in excel - see the yellow banner near the top of the page
    Best Regards,

    Kaper
