    Help dealing with IT departments

    Hi,
So I have some experience in VBA and am employed on this basis.

The problem is that our IT department don't have any knowledge at all, but their opinions hold a lot of weight. As a result everything I do is treated with suspicion and the fact that they don't understand just increased this.
Sadly this seem to be a recurring theme for me in that IT personnel don't have any understanding and are limited to plugging things in or reinstalling software, so I thought that there must be others with this situation.

The boss who employed me, although pleased with the results, doesn't know anything either and is scared by the IT's predictions of impending doom, so doesn't offer me any support.

Short of getting another job, is there anything that can be done to cope with an unsupportive and suspicious IT department?

I'm being treated like some black magician whom they resent but tolerate because of the results, whereas I'd really like to work with IT to take things forward in a collaborative manner.

You're probably right Ali, although it's not so easy with this covid thing.
Would be interested in others' experiences though as this seems to be a recurring theme for me and I'm not bad looking.

Re: Help dealing with IT departments

I have been in similar situations where the IT dept order new/change out machines, fix printers, manage the phone system and do general maintenance when things break down. Their Office skills were minimal (at best), but...they were "the IT dept, so they must know what they are doing"...yeah right!.

best way to handle that is to make them thing they came up with the revolutionary new concept, but make it (quietly) know you introduced them to the concept.

I'd get your boss to ask IT to formalise their issues in writing, then address them one by one. That should force them to give concrete reasons for their concerns, if they can, rather than vague prophesies of doom that you cannot refute.

    Appreciate your input.
I tried these suggesting which worked up to a point. Ultimately I had to have a discussion with my boss to get the IT department to back off.
