Thumbs down No hijacking threads rule

I found a thread from 2 years ago with an unsolved issue. I made a post a few moments ago asking the user was a solution ever found. A mod came and closed the thread and said no hijacking allowed. A dead thread from two years ago outlining the exact same issue I faced!? Anyway, I just found the solution to the problem but now the thread is closed so I can't share it for other users to find. I feel the hijacking rule needs to be revisted.

    Re: No hijacking threads rule

First, I moved this thread because this post is not asking an Excel question, but rather asking about forum policy.

Most posts to "dead threads" are hijacks. In this case, it's true you were asking whether the original issue had been solved, but our experience is that if you don't see a solution, it's not been solved. In addition, two members posted questions for the OP to try to help but the OP did not respond. So the OP either gave up or solved it without caring to share a solution.

You will almost always get better results by posting your question as a new thread. This is true even if you think your question is similar, and even if you think your question is exactly the same. This has the advantage of showing up as an "unanswered thread" and will generally get more attention that a two-year-old thread that already has several posts.

If you are inclined to share your solution for others to find, you can always create a new thread, describe the problem, and post the solution, then mark the thread SOLVED.

In the circumstances, I will unlock the thread so that you can post the solution you found - thanks for doing that.

In general, however, we always prefer you to start a new thread, even if the issue is identical to someone else's. The hijacking rule seems to work just fine for the vast majority of our members, so I don't really see any reason for it to be reviewed, but I appreciate your opinion.

    Re: No hijacking threads rule

Just to add my 2c worth here. It can sometimes be hard to decide if a thread is being hijacked or if, like in your case, a question is being asked to see if the thread was eventually solved.

Letting some "hijacking" pass and stopping others becomes a very slippery slope that we want to avoid - so the rule of thumb is...if you are adding an answer to a thread, go for it. If you are asking about anything else - dont

Also, I want to commend you for questioning this, we take no offence to anyone questioning our rules...however, they were heavily reworked to make them less heavy handed, not that long ago, so the chances of them being changed for just 1 or 2 members is slim

    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
    2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
    3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you
