    Re: Top posters for the year

    Only since September ... But it's the best thing ever.
    it's not appropriate to quote, but it stuck me !!!

    The +11.000 posts for AliGW are, in my opinion, a statistical outlier, the result of being too much a police-officer, trying to force and maintain the rules of this site and too less being a kindergarten teacher, trying to guide the new members in using the site.
    I know it's a delicate balance.

    As AliGW, i'm a member for a long time already and restarted since end september also on a "more intensive" way.
    If i extrapolate my posts of this 3 months to a year, i'm in the upper part of that top20-table.
    I also post on other sites, so i know the tendence of forumrules, but don't know them by heart and from time to time, i break a rule, like with my car in traffic.

    A few days ago, i received an warning of breaking such a rule and that warning stays there for 3 weeks.
    What a stupid measure is that ?
    It wasn't my intention to respond during that period (and perhaps permanent), but, you see, i broke my own rule.

    AliGW, you're a retired teacher, when i read your profile.
    Do something about it, don't dictate the rules anymore, have more empathy.

    For the rest of that list, congratulations for your efforts and to everybody on the site, a happy new year

    Perhaps a question, what is the total number of posts and questions for 2021, the whole year ?
    Best regards, Bart

    Keep up the good work you do, especially keeping our participants on track. Moderation is a tough task here and you do a great job at it. We have rules here and run a tight ship. Those that don't like our rules or want to comply with them can, of course, take there issues elsewhere. There are lots of help sites, but none that compare to this one

    bsalv, as tempting as it is to call you out on your comments, it's not worth the effort. Put in your time, earn your stripes, then express an opinion. Ali is 1 of the hardest working mods on this forum, that's all im going to say

    Re: Top posters for the year

    i follow your guidelines, this is my last post here and i regret the time i spend here the last months.

    This is a great site, no doubt, for helping people with excel problems but not a cadet school to be run like a tight ship.
    It has everything to do with the definition of "moderation". It's to avoid/resolve conflicts, ...

    Goodbye and take care.

    bsalv sorry to see you go, but all forum have rules to which all members are expected to abide. I guess its true what they say, you cant please all the people all the time.

    @bsalv

    With regret I agree. There is a definite moderator clique.
    It's a shame because while of course there should be a code of conduct and spam etc should be filtered out, the focus should primarily be on support.
    The fact that people can be lauded for a number of posts, most of which are of a petty, nit-picking (often belittling) nature doesn't really create a great impression.

    I don't expect anything to change and these sentiments will no doubt be excused, if they're even acknowledged at all. There are good people here, but this forum certainly appears to be moderated by a set of self-promoting people with narcissistic tendencies whose behaviour, while horribly apparent to most, is seemingly unrecognisable to them. Either that or they recognise it and schmooze in order retain a 'position' to fulfil some self-defined deficiency.

    Maybe all forums are like this, or even moderated by the same people? I don't know. I just joined hoping to find a collaborative environment of like minded people who were willing to share their experience in a friendly way.
    It's a disappointment but perhaps I should just grateful that I don't have to encounter them in real life!

    You can't please 'em all.

    I agree that post numbers are a metric of nothing, other than activity. However, you'll find that the members list is sorted by decreasing order of rep points, which may indicate some element of Added Value. However, the same names are there in pretty much the same order.

    Not much else I can say..

    @Omer Simpsun

    I am offended by your remarks. Moderators here volunteer their time to keep this forum in order. We have rules here that we are asked by the owner to maintain. We are not narcistic in any form or means. We are dedicated to keeping a forum that is beneficial to the masses. If you do not like our rules, our temperament or anything else, you of course are free to take your issues elsewhere. Afterall, this is a free forum where all who provide answers/services here are not paid and do this only because we feel the need to help even if this means maintaining order to the posts.

    If providing sulutions for hundreds of members and helping many more towards solutions is 'narcissistic' and 'self-promoting', then guilty as charged. The thousands of messages of gratitude I and others receive would suggest otherwise, but I am sure the two negative voices in this thread know best.

    Have a lovely day, everyone!

    Are you familiar with fora in French, Dutch, German, Spanish, etc. I doubt it.
    I am, and can easily contradict your statement.

    Re: Top posters for the year

    Some basic moderation rules are often absent:
    - a full comprehension of the worth of sytematic helpers
    - moderation should primarily be concentrated on (new) Posters
    - appreciation of sytematic helpers
    - a lack of comprehension of the value of a helper's contribution (lack of mederator's expertise)
    - a lack of comprehension for the 'conversation' that arises between certain OP's and helpers for some length of time (sometimes years)
    - a lack of comprehension for the helpers motives: it can be 'guiding', 'educating', 'challenging', 'helping', 'providing suggestions, 'providing solutions'
    - a lack of comprehension for the helper's expectation what an OP should do or not do (adapting suggestions, testing suggestions, debugging, etc.)

    In the cae of 'moderating' helpers (if at all) the adagium should be 'handle with care'. The forum's success is primarily dependent of the helpers. Moderation of helpers should primarily consist of asking for motives behind answers in a PM.
    The imposing of infractions to helpers should be avoided.

    @snb

    This is an English based forum and I stand by my statement. I have no need for any other language based forum. If one does need another language based forum, as you have indicated, there are many out there and I don't doubt that many are of a superior nature and anyone that does not like our approach here is free to take their business elsewhere. No one is holding them hostage. I am happy to see when you post here but if you are unhappy, then you have choices.
