Why are some users allowed to circumvent the 'Rules'?

I notice that Flame Retired closed my previous thread before all the discussion was completed so I have another query.

Why are some users (Bebo) allowed to circumvent the rules by putting advertisements for professional services in a signature block, (including a PayPal account) whereas (evidently) I am not?

I'm not sure this would pass the 'pub test' as being 'fair' in any sense of the word.

Interested to know what the admins/mods think?

    Thanks.

If I had to hazard a guess, he didn't ask how to create a signature block to advertise services for payment

Re: Why are some users allowed to circumvent the 'Rules'?

It's the solicitation for payment part primarily. The fallout from that left me believing a redirect to the rules was in order. Regarding those other members I do not recall seeing any of them solicit payment or suggest anything close.

In the future you can receive payment through commercial services once you have attained Guru status.

Bearing all those thoughts in mind closing the thread seemed best.

Well, clearly not, but that doesn't answer my question, does it?

Do you not think this signature is soliciting payment?

I mean, I would have thought that 'paypal' was a dead giveaway?

    OK

Having reconsidered I've reopened the thread.

What good is reopening the thread going to do now I have been forced to start this one?

I want to know why some users can clearly advertise professional services on their signature block but I can't, and what you, as a moderator, are going to do about it.

I read that as tacit agreement that you could set up your signature.

As I have answered your question, there should be no reason why you don't now mark the previous thread solved.

Re: Why are some users allowed to circumvent the 'Rules'?

Yep, as soon as I get approval from an admin or moderator that I can also put solicitation for professional services in that signature block, which was part of the the original thread.

In other words, rules 4 and 5 do not apply to me. After all, I don't want to be breaking any rules. It has got me banned more than once.

. . . which was part of the the original thread.
That wasn't a question, it was your reason for wanting to do it.

Re: Why are some users allowed to circumvent the 'Rules'?

I didn't say it was a question, I said it was part of the original thread.
The solution to the original thread is to be permitted to do what others have done, that why I said what I wanted to do.

The offending lines have been removed from that user's signature line.

In future, if you wish to report something like this, please either PM one of the Mods or Admins or use the Report Post button. Thanks.

Re: Why are some users allowed to circumvent the 'Rules'?

The ONLY reason that ANY members here would have any form of solicitation in their signature would be because neither the mods nor admin have noticed it, and no members have brought it to our attention.

I have personally removed solicitation from members signature, as soon as I have seen it. If is most certainly NOT the case that a select few members are exempt form this rule or that rule.

No-one - members, gurus, mods, admin - none are above the rules, and any deviation from our rules would need explicit permission from the amin team. As far as memory serves, I have only permitted that once, and for a specified time, when we needed to do some testing and 1 of the mods created a dummy/regular member account so we could run some tests. Once those tests were complete, that dummy account was deleted.

Based on the points I have made above, I believe that your question/concern/request has now been answered, and that this discussion has run its course, thank you for bringing the "errant" signature to our attention, that signature has been corrected/updated.

Please feel free to bring any further deviations to our attention.

Well, that worked well didn't it?

I reported a user for having a link to a commercial website in his signature using the method requested.
The user changed his signature by removing the link and then one of your admin/mods denied that this user had anything wrong with his signature and tried to make ME look like the clown by closing the thread!!!

    Really?? Transparency anyone??

I'll be pointing it out in a PUBLIC forum from now on, but thanks for trying.
