    Moderation of forums

    note to the moderators

I think you should pay a little more attention to new posters, rather than just tell them to read the rules(still include in the warning post) , if you have taken the time to read their post why not suggest a title to them!

Obviously if somebody has a lot of posts they should know better!

I have done this several times when replying to a poster, some may think the post describes their problem or doesn't have a description!

If people are going to spend 15 minutes helping someone create a formula, why not spend 10 seconds suggesting a title!
    Regards
    Darren

Squiggler, members may not know how to use Excel well, but if titles akin to a Google search string is beyond their ken, this forum is not for them. There are unmoderated Excel forums available to those who would prefer them.

how about including some examples of what you want! I notice a lot of people are on here because they are trying to get something done quickly, it might be their first visit and hoping to get urgent help.

I would expect anybody with several posts to have read the forums and should have a reasonable idea of what titles are in there.

The first time user who has a problem might just have jumped here and signed up in the hope of getting a quick reply! Since this forum is about helping why not help!

besides if people where that good at google they would have found answers by searching!

We try to help "newbies" with their first posts, the main problems they encounter are caused because they don't take the time to actually read the Rules
    Hope that helps.

    Hi squiggler,

wouldn't you agree that taking the time to create a good thread title already is a first step to the solution ?

Besides, as everybody here is a "volunteer" and probably helps on his free time , if an OP wants a quick answer, maybe he should post in the " paying" forum ?
And , to be honest, when I see some answers given here, I suspect those who answer sometimes put a lot of time in for free

    Re: Moderation of forums

One of the major problems is that the body of a question often does not explain properly, so how can we amend the title. Some things are relatively simple - adding code tags, moving posts for newbies. Changing a title requires trying to interpret what is asked, time that can be used answering a properly titled question.

My comment wasn't to amend a title but in the case of actually having read the question, to perhaps suggest a title or nudge them towards one, not actually change the title yourself.

And as I said it might be useful to throw a couple of examples of good titles in the FAQ rather than just the bad!

    Re: Moderation of forums

    Hi all,

to chip in: I appreciate the strict rules and their enforcement in this forum. I've stopped using the "other" forums because I don't want to have to open a post before I can see if it is something I can help with.

I'm no good at VBA, so when a post title mentions anything VBA related, I know it's not for me. If it's charting, I'd like to jump in. But if I had to open every "Urgent" or "Help needed" post first to find out what they're about, I would no longer be here.

Other forums also have rules about descriptive thread titles. In the other big Excel forum these rules are not enforced. As a consequence it's full of generic cries for "help".

This forum has the best titles I've seen around the web. True, it requires some effort, but then, posters are asking for other people to put in effort, so it's just fair that they put some effort in themselves.

I still think somewhere in this thread the point got lost!

I am all for great titles, that help find the problem with searches!

the problem I had was with the fact a moderator had read a question, which would have taken 2 seconds to say See rules... this [suggestion] Would be a better title!

    Re: Moderation of forums

So, on top of offering free solutions (that sometimes takes a lot of effort and time to come with), you are suggesting we spend extra time to formulate an appropriate title for the user who obviously has not taken the time to read the rules before posting?

The least that we ask for getting a free solution within minutes of posting is that the user reads and abides by our rules.
Where there is a will there are many ways.
