    Pivot Table Reference 2007

Any thoughts on what I should read for advanced pivot tables for Excel 2007? I see "Mr Excel" has "Pivot Table Data Crunching" and Deb Dalgleish (contextures) has "Excel Pivot Table Recipes." Anyone read both? Can be an e-book/C D or print.

I've got Bill Jelen's, aka Mr Excel, Pivot Table Data Crunching book and it's pretty good.

No one has read Deb's book? or has a favorite other than "PT Data Crunching?"

Was this the one you were considering?

    Re: Pivot Table Reference 2007

It's possible but I think I know most of the basic stuff. I'm looking for the more advanced tricks which would probably be the data crunching book or her recipe book. Thanks though. I'll read through what's there.

    Re: Pivot Table Reference 2007

I'm not very fond of the D.Dalgiesh book mentioned above. It's fine as a reference, if you already know how pivot tables work in general, and need to look up a certain aspect of a PT. But it's not a step-by-step guide on how to get started with PTs.

    Re: Pivot Table Reference 2007

To be fair, that is how it's marketed:
"Excel Pivot Tables Recipe Book: A Problem-Solution Approach assumes that you know the basics of Excel and pivot tables, and provides troubleshooting tips and techniques, and programming examples.

This book is for anyone who uses Excel pivot tables, and who only reads the manual when all else fails."

    Re: Pivot Table Reference 2007

romperstomper is right (no surprise there). I just wanted to point out that this book is not about learning how to use Pivot Tables with Excel 2007. "Pivot Table Data Crunching" covers a lot more of the basics and how-to basic knowledge arount PTs. If you already know how to use them, then the "Recipes" book is an excellent reference for specific issues.

    cheers,

Just bought this one "Excel Pivot Tables Recipe Book: A Problem-Solution Approach". As I use PT's on a daily basis but would like to use them more efficiently.

I'll ask Deb for a refund if it doesn't cut the mustard!

I type like that during my lunch break, with a dripping, crumbling steak and cheese pie in one hand, the back of my other hand greasy from wiping my chin and only the pinkie and ring finger available for typing ....

Looooooooool paul. I see what you mean. Just deleted. I often sit on the PC in the evening before going to bed and I sometimes take a sleeping tablet or two! Guess they kicked in as I was typing... how embarrasing!

I am now fully alert and able to comment on DD's book. I found it and am finding it a great read!

    Cheers guys!

"evening"? Your location says London. That would have been about mid-day to early arvo, if I have my time zones lined up correctly. Wish I could take a pill and space out after lunch ....

    Re: Pivot Table Reference 2007

Ah, yeees, right. The post shows up as 11:42 AM NZ time and I read it wrong. After all these years, I still don't cope with the AM and PM concept (I vividly remember that I got out of bed at an un-godly early hour to make it to a 6:30 meeting. Only to find out that it was actually happening at 18:30. Arrghh). If people would just use the 24 hr system world wide AND use A4 instead of Letter paper, AND put the month in the proper place in a date (i.e. MY preferred place), my life would be so much easier ...

(but then I wouldn't have anything to moan about, would I?)
