    Moving up the ladder !!!

    Hey guys,

Of late, i have been curious to know where i stand with regard to the levels in this forum. I have read this in the rules -
Once you have been registered for 60 days and posted 100 posts your user title will change from Registered User to Forum Contributor, you will be able to upload a non-animated avatar. When you get to 120 days registered and 200 posts, your title will change to Valued Forum Contributor and you will be able to upload an animated avatar. When your title reaches Forum Guru you can upload a profile picture, we will leave you to wonder how long you have to be registered and how many posts for that!.

So what are the other levels in this forum?

Also, what are the levels with regards to the reps? Do they get upgraded once in every 100 reps? Just curious !!!
If I have helped, Don't forget to add to my reputation (click on the star below the post)
Don't forget to mark threads as "Solved" (Thread Tools->Mark thread as Solved)

There's nothing after Forum Guru as far as I know. The Rep is 100 per bar for dark green and 200 for light green, I believe. All fairly meaningless.

Being a moderator has nothing to do with being good at Excel or VBA, though. It's just housekeeping.

Re: Moving up the ladder !!!

The title doesn't really fit. "Guru" suggests exceptional knowledge, not a long membership tenor and high contribution volume (although they may also be factors). I think a title such as "Forum Veteran" (or various others) would be more fitting, but I realise that the moderators may not be able to change it even if they wanted to.

Some moderators are nominated and some ask, for which there is a vote (by the other moderators). Like RS stated, you don't need to be awesome at Excel, you have to want to do some housekeeping (which is where I fit in). Personally, I can't wait until next summer when this becomes my hobby again (I know, get a life)!

Probably the best way to view the reputation levels is by sorting the member list.

Arlette is in the top 100!

Re: Moving up the ladder !!!

If you want to see "where you are on the ladder" and set yourself a target or a challenge, click on Community, Members List and then on Reputation.

You'll find that you have a relatively high post count given you've only been on the forum a couple of months or so.

And, if you look at your profile, you can see how many posts you make each day, though I'm not sure how that's calculated. Your post count is higher than mine so you're obviously putting some time in

Keep working at it, status and rep will come in time.

I think the system need an overhaul. It is cool to get recognized for the time and effort put into answering questions but often rep points are hard to come by. I guess that most posters don't realize that they 'can' (or should) click on the rep scales when someone helps them out.

Also who do I talk to about bumping up my status??? I have almost mastered the art of writing an formula... did you know that if you put =1+1 in a cell then excel will tell you the sum.... AMAZING... I am surprised everyday by what I can learn from online forums

Now back to my 'real job'

    abousetta

P.S. On a more serious note, no amount of rep points can every truly reflect the help that people on this forum have provided countless individuals. My hat off to everyone who supports this network of true 'Gurus'.

Looking up the definition of Guru, it doesn't necessarily mean "exceptional" knowledge. Guru originally meant "Spiritual Teacher", and came to mean, more generally, just "Teacher" or "Leader".

I believe the title "Guru" fits. It doesn't mean you are an undisputed expert and leader in the field, just that you have some skill or knowledge and make an effort to share. Making 1200+ posts over the course of 23 months, to me, shows you are a "guru", an "imparter of knowledge".

Re: Moving up the ladder !!!

Yeah. It'd be nice to base it on your Rep or something, or some formula of Rep, Posts and Time Spent, but the system only allows for posts, with no way to distinguish between helpful posts or not. The general community makeup, though, promotes people to contribute back to the community. I doubt people who only ask questions would make it to Guru. That's a lot of questions. But even still, they are educating as well. Simply by asking the question, they are allowing future searchers to find an answer to the same question.

Exactly. 1200+ posts does not mean you have been answering questions. Even if you define Guru simply as a teacher (see below), the title still doesn't fit.

Sorry, mate, but in this context I disagree with you. In addition to my own understanding/interpretation of the word, here is a current definition per Wikipedia (which was the 1st hit I got on Google):

Rep is no good either (in my opinion). In my view, the mix of criteria is too complicated for an automatic promotion, so it should probably be based on a vote, subject to certain minima. Of course, vote-based promotions come with their own problems...

I think recognition is a double-edged sword. We as humans feed off it (goal-driven) but at the same time need to be independent of it (self-motivated) to function properly.
