iPhone 4s vs Nokia Lumia 800

    Good afternoon all,

I'm considering getting a new mobile phone and I'm looking for advice.

I have had various iPods and have an iPad so I'm familiar with the Apple technology, but wonder whether I should go for an iPhone 4s, wait for an iPhone 5, or go for a Nokia Lumia Windows phone.

My wife has a Nokia Lumia 800 and I do quite like it, and I'm very tempted.

I'd like, if possible, to tether my iPad to whatever I get, although there are a lot of WiFi hotspots around these days.

What have you got, or what would you buy, and why?

Chucking it down with sunshine here in Manchester ... ho, hum, another wonderful day in Paradise ... I mean, it IS chucking it down but, at the same time, it is sunny. Weird.

    Thanks TMS

iPhone 5 is due out in a few months, personally I would wait for that rather than getting a 4S. The 5 will probably not have the same issue as the 4S (a processor too powerful for the battery, making battery life crappy). Nokia is a great phone...ahhh the days of the Nokia N95...anyway, depends on if you can tether everything to your iPad and what your needs are.

Hi TMShucks, I purchased this phone 3 or so months ago and absolutely love it. The screen is bigger than an iPhone but it is still small enough to fit into pockets, even with the Ballistic case that I have on it. I highly recommend this phone.

Without a doubt wait for the iPhone 5. Regardless of what substitute phone you would purchase in the meantime, the day that shiny new iPhone comes out you're going to wish you had one.

iPhones are grossly over rated and very expensive. Plus, there are (debatably) more open source apps for Android products than there are for the iPhone products. Samsung makes nice smart phones too, so nice that Apple is suing them.

I'm not aware that apple have released a date for iphone5 so any statement is pure speculation. only an apple employee would be in a position to comment and they won't unless they don't like working at apple. current rumor is either Sep/Oct or early next year since the 4s is still selling well.

I recently upgraded to an iPhone 4s from the Samsung Fascinate and it was the best decision I made. In my opinion the iPhone 4s is lite years ahead of any other smart phone out there. With that said I think it worth every penny.

Iphone has the elegance, and a pretty UI. Not a fan of windows phone series, would stick to the iphone in that case. I am an andrioid user, and for me its a case of openness vs elegance. There are a bunch of apps for the droid that dont exist on the iphone.

I agree with Martin, some of the Apple users I know get sort of snotty about the product they use. While Apple products and ideas may be revolutionary, they are not necessarily superior. Get a functionable Android TMS! One more thing that I disagree about when it comes to Apple products is how fast they roll out version of the same stuff. iPhones & iPads are prime examples of this.

A typical type of marketing campaign from Orange (oops I mean Apple) - "The all new iPad 12G Double D has way more features than the iPad 11G C-cup, (even though we're not going to tell what those features are".

Re: iPhone 4s vs Nokia Lumia 800

im with MW on this 1. Apple products are over-rated and over-priced (imo). there are as-good if not better devices/phones on the market that i would get, before i get anything apple. Also, i saw an article the other day that said that Samsung had over 50% of the mobile phone market, while apple had less that 20%...Samsung must have got that far ahead for a really good reason, you would think?

Re: iPhone 4s vs Nokia Lumia 800

I have a Lumina 800 and it smokes the others. With Windows 8 coming out the connection will be even better.

The Nokia Drive app is better than my Garmin that does the same thing.
Apple has about 300,000 apps (many of them are junk and not tested) while only 60,000 for Windows Phone.

I believe Google Android and Apple products will slide when Windows 8 arrives. Have you seen the Surface?

It seems to me things are moving to the cloud. Windows Phone has this built in. With Windows Phone you can read and do some functions of Excel, on the phone.

It is a very tough call as Apple has a huge market and Google is charging but Microsoft has the experience and the better office apps.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

Re: iPhone 4s vs Nokia Lumia 800

Microsoft does office apps the best, thats it though. The specs on the Galaxy S3, even S2 blow away the lumia 800. Im not daring to migrate immediately either to "the cloud". I dont think people are going to be that receptive for Win8, its an OS built around touch screens, not point-and-click desktops from what Ive seen so far. Theyre definitely going in a new direction, but its only to lure mac users back. Plus with apps a minimum cost of $1.49, why should I even move to that when most of my apps now cost $1, and generally most of them are free (I buy pro and support the app devs though)

Fairly well known that I'm not an Apple fan. I think it's great that they push the boundaries and if people want to spend that kind of money then it's up to them but nobody has yet to convince me that an iPhone is really worth the cost. When I got my Galaxy S2 the iPhone 4s would have cost me £20 per month more on contract and £5 more to insure which over the period of 18 months is a lot more to pay for something that really isn't any better. I'm sure the same thing will be true of the iPhone 5 when it comes out. As far as Windows goes I don't really care that I can't open an Excel spreadsheet on my phone (although there are ways now) and they hold little other attraction to pull me away from Android.

Re: iPhone 4s vs Nokia Lumia 800

I don't like fundamentalists on either side of the Apple divide and I also don't believe that any of the top smartphones are massively better than any of the others. Having said that my last three phones have all been iPhones (4S now) and I've been very happy with them. I've never had an Android phone (or tablet) but everyone I know who has gone from Android to iPhone is very pleased they did; I don't happen to know anyone who's gone the other way. (I haven't had a Nokia since about 7 years ago but always liked them.)

I'm not a fan of Apple's methods or pricing but I like their products for the most part and having Macs/iPad at home makes an iPhone a natural choice for me.

I can't really conceive of trying to work with Excel on a phone!
