Giving them what they ask for vs giving them what they want

Very rarely is there just the right amount of information to create a solution to an OP's problem.

Half of the time they are so vague I'm not even sure its a question. Other times its so specific you can tell its part of bigger picture, and there is an easier or more useful way of achieving the bigger picture.

When do you pry for information and when do you just give them what they want and continue on with a half baked scheme?

After answering so many similar questions, you can sometimes understand what all the OP wouldnt ask but might need to be done.

For e.g. we see so many "consolidate into summary sheet" or "split from one sheet to many" kind of requests. So i tend to ask some standard questions like - would the summary sheet already exist? Would the data need to be copied to the next available row of the summary sheet or should existing data be cleared? Would the sheets into which the data needs to be split, be created already or should the macro create it? , etc.

The OP might not think of all these aspects in advance and may resort to some manual steps like clearing the summary sheet before running the macro or clearing the sub-sheets which the macro can do in a jiffy. Since i know this can save the OP some time, i tend to point them in that direction.

    Take this post for instance:

I'm pretty sure the OP would love to have a more refined answer if they knew it was possible.

Just plow through. I don't care if I am wrong, usually the OP will come back clarify more after code or a formula is written.
Be fore warned, I regularly post drunk. So don't take offence (too much) to what I say.

The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then, one day...
