Is there a trick to find your own old posts?

I posted in a thread a while ago with a (what I recall) huge if formula. I tried to located it with no luck. I tried google with string such as: "Jacc IF site:excelforum.com". I also tried a bit with the site search in Excelforum but it's very difficult. Anyone have any tricks of how to find certain old posts?
<----- If you were helped by my posts you can say "Thank you" by clicking the star symbol down to the left

If the problem is solved, finish of the thread by clicking SOLVED under Thread Tools
I don't wish to leave you with no answer, yet I sometimes miss posts. If you feel I forgot you, remind me with a PM or just bump the thread.

If you go to your profile underneath the avatar there are two links for:
"find latest posts"
"find latest started threads"

Did you get rep for it? If you click on UserCP you will see a list of the last 100 threads that you got rep for, so you might find it there. If not, you can click on View All Subscribed Threads just above that list to see them all - if you have an idea of when you posted it you can easily select a page and check the dates on that page.

Having said that, though, I find it difficult to locate that thread that was "just like the one I'm working on now".

Hope this helps.

You should be able to find it under "Find latest posts" in your profile page.
If I have helped, Don't forget to add to my reputation (click on the star below the post)
Don't forget to mark threads as "Solved" (Thread Tools->Mark thread as Solved)
Use code tags when posting your VBA code:
Your code here
This is exactly what I mean. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one struggling with this.

Re: Is there a trick to find your own old posts?

Hi Simon,

I always do that, but to give you some idea of the problem I faced recently ...

A couple of days ago there was a thread related to displaying a 4-shift rota on a calendar. I though it sounded just like a thread I responded to concerning a 3-shift rota. I thought it was about 6 months ago, but I couldn't remember the thread title. So, searching backwards through that list of subscribed threads, I couldn't find it. I save all my attachments in a particular folder on my PC, and they all have filenames which start efxxx_, where xxx is a sequential number which I usually just tag on to the beginning of the filename that the OP has used, so I thought I'd search through that folder for the attachment. Eventually I found it with a filename "ef153_Extrusion 3 Shift 2012 SHIFTS ONLY.xls", and it was dated in August of last year. So, armed with that I could then look through my list of attachments from UserCP, and eventually found the thread I was looking for. By the time I had made a few adjustments to the file and checked back to the thread, someone else had responded and the OP indicated that the reply was fine.

So, a few hours wasted that came to nought.

There must be a quicker way ...

Re: Is there a trick to find your own old posts?

OK maybe stupid question, but what are the benefits of "subscribing" to all your threads? I have a 1/2-dozen or so that I have subscribed to, but if I want to find a post of mine, I use the "my posts" button. Seems to me if I sub to every thread I respond to, I will be swamped with subs?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Yes, as a prolific poster you do get swamped a bit, but I like getting email notifications of posts made to threads that I'm subscribed to - you can easily see if there are any follow-up posts, even to threads that are quite old. You do have to clear out your email inbox quite often, though.

The pm was private Arlette! (PM = Private Message) I didn't state the nature of the pm.

Sometimes I subscribe (but don't post) to threads where I'm curious as to what the answer might be or what form the solution might take - I've learned much in that way

You don't have to get emails for subscribed threads. I use the "through my control panel only" option as "Default Thread Subscription Mode" (it's in general settings). That means all threads in which I post automatically appear in the "Subscribed threads" list, but I don't get any emails. First thing in the morning (or if I've been away for some time) I just use Quick Links > Subscribed threads. These are listed in order of last reply (bolded if there have been replies since I last looked) so I can easily see any activity in "my" threads (and I use "newest first" so that those recent replies appear at the top of each thread).

As xladept says, you can also subscribe to other threads that may interest you and those will appear too

If I think that any of my subscribed threads are "keepers" - i.e. examples of formulas etc. that I might want to use again then I move them into one of my "favorites" folders (you can see up multiple folders with different names)

I have a few that I subscribed to because they had useful stuff in them (but mostly I forget they are even there, so that helps huh lol?)
Threads I have posted on also appear bolded if there has been any activity on them, I use the "new posts" button

I have that setting and I find it helps a little bit when it comes to finding my own old stuff and like Pete says it shows you any old follow ups which is also useful.
I don't have any e-mail notification though.

Yup, I do that a lot too. Surprisingly many of them are never answered it seems. Our services are in high demand.

That was a useful tip, I will do that!

Yes, subscription is a way to help you find old posts since it keeps a record. However, even I as a small time poster, struggle to find stuff in my 800 or so posts. I think it would be useful if you could filter your posts or your subscribed threads on things like "SOLVED", number of posts in that thread or number of times I posted in that thread etc. Or maybe the list of subscribed threads could be searchable? Pretty much what I was trying to accomplish with my google search using the site:excelforum.com feature.
I realize that these may not be realistic requests but I just wanted to start a discussion about it to see what would come up.

Does anyone else use google site:excelforum.com to find stuff? Is the internal search function powered by google or how does it work?

I think it would be nice to have a count of how many of your subscribed threads were solved - a couple of months ago it took me several hours to count my solved threads - if I remember correctly, there were 956 threads and 367 were solved.

I agree. If it was possible to filter, as I suggested above, that could just be an extra feature of the filter function.

Hmm... I justed started to explore the Advanced Search option. There seems to be some useful stuff there, maybe even similar to what I requested. Just gonna try it out a bit.

It would be nice to be able to search for a thread which contains a certain (named) attachment, but I don't think you can do that on here.

Also, it would be useful for everyone if there were a description somewhere of how to use the Search facilities.

They could install SPhinx search which has more possibilities and is more accurate, failing that try this https://www.google.co.uk/#q=site:exc...lloyd&safe=off so that string searches Google for this site and my name, have a play with the parameters (+simon+lloyd+...etc) and see what you can get to work best for you.
