An Excel tool for extracting a Microsoft Project file into Excel

The attached file is an Excel file that will open a Project file and extract the information into an Excel file. This is very helpful for providing a project to people who do not have Microsoft Project. Project does have the ability to export to Excel but it is not as comprehensive as this.

This tool uses late binding; no references are required so should work

The macros can be exported and imported into Microsoft Project. To run in Project, change all occurrences of

The output file can be edited but is intended primarily for information and analysis, rather than as a substitute for using Microsoft Project to maintain the project.

    Features:
    • Show Project flag values
    • Creates an Excel outline so you can view the desired task level
    • Allows selection of which fields to include
    • Automatically detects custom fields that have been given custom names and allow them to be selected for inclusion
    • Option to include a column to prompt the user that they have made a change to data that requires corresponding changes (e.g., change to 100% complete but finish date is in the future)

    Using:
    • Upon starting the process, you will be prompted to select a Microsoft Project file.
    • The tool opens Project and opens the file.
    • A form comes up that allows you to select the fields for export. The task name is always required. Built-in fields have a checkbox. Custom fields are shown in a listbox. All selected fields appear in a listbox to the right which can be sorted to indicate the order you want the columns in the Excel file.
    • You will see a progress bar for loading the task data
    • Then you will see a notice that formatting is occurring (not a progress bar)
    • The project data will be on the first worksheet and a legend on the second.
