Numbering equations in word with three levels.

    Hallo

I simply cannot get this working. I want to number my equation such that each equation is numbered and the numbering begins for each chapter and each subchapter. E.g. (2.2.5) as the fifth equation in chapter two subchapter 2.

Can anybody help me to do this in MS Word 2010??

It would help my a lot!

I can only make if work with two levels (i want three) such that only the chapter is represented in the numbering (results in very high numbers).

Please let me know if you can help me.

Thank you in advance. Have a great day out there.

    Regards damp

The simplest way would be to use Word's Heading 1, 2 & 3 Styles for each of the levels.

I have already done this, and i does not work (I can't get the numbering to work properly.) Can you? e.g. send an example file?

I definitely believe it has something to do with inserting a sequence. But i don't know how.

Merely saying "I have already done this, and i does not work " only tells me you haven't done it, but nothing about what problems you're having with it. It really is quite easy. See attached.

There are absolutely no equation numbers in your document.
you have just written some text with different styles.. This does absolutely not work!!

Can you insert equation numbers that counts each equation for each chapter and each subchapter or style chapter 2.?

Equations, per se, don't have numbers. Paragraphs have numbers. Your follow-up post suggests you want the numbers to appear after the paragraph content. That is not how Word works. You could, however, have:

    Equation 2.1.1 a+b = 2

It is indeed possible to make my suggestion. I believe this can be done using a sequence. This is done by inserting a "Field" if you don't know this function.

Can figure out to use the sequence function for numbering. Anyone?

Re: Numbering equations in word with three levels.

Sure you can use SEQ fields, but:
    a) you'd need at least two (and probably three) per equation;
    b) they don't generate automatic numbering in the same way Word's auto numbering does; and
    c) you can't readily cross-reference them.

An alternative approach would be to use a two-cell table for each equation, with the equation in the left cell and a Heading-3 paragraph (plus any description you want), as per the document I previously attached, in the right cell.

Okay. Too bad. That is not useful.

Word is just not capable of making multi-level numbering in word for equations guess.
