Question Multi-Level Lists, and Half-Steps in Headings

    Hello:

I am creating a multi-level list in word that tracks a particular statute (i.e. a law). The problem is, sometimes, the legislature has to go back and insert new sections into the statute, either because new issues have come up, or they failed to consider something when initially passing the law. Often the legislature will insert the new statute between two existing statutes. For example, they might have section 101, 102, 103, 104, and then later on realize they need to make a new law that would logically fit between 103 and 104, but to avoid re-numbering the entire system, they just call the new statute "103.5".

Therein lies the rub. I need a way to get my multi-level list to display the half-step without affecting the rest of list.

    So, for example:

    Heading 1: Article 101
    Heading 2: Section 101(a)
    Heading 2: Section 101(b)
    Heading 1: Article 102
    Heading 1: Article 103
    Heading 2: Section 103(a)
    Heading 3: Section 103(a)(1)
    Heading 3: Section 103(a)(2)
    Heading 1: Article 103.5
    Heading 2: Section 103.5(a)
    Heading 2: Section 103.5(b)
    Heading 1: Article 104

Basically, I need the multi-level list to incorporate the ".5" into the heading and keep it in the formatting of the levels inside.

Is there a way to create a list within my bigger list, and have the "103.5" be an exception?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will help

One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Unfortunately, this does not work for me. It seems to be for excel, whereas my use case is MS Word.

The issue is I'm creating a multilevel list, but I need it to be formatted in a special way - to track the sections of a statute.

So, Heading One would be "Article 100", and then the subheadings would be "Section 100-1", "Section 100-2", "Section 100-3", "Section 100-4", with each of those subheadings being dynamically linked back to the main heading, and automatically numbering themselves. The problem is, occasionally, the legislature will add new sections to the statute, but because of the topic, they feel it fits more naturally between sections 3 and 4, and therefore they call it "Section 100-3.5". Obviously, this creates difficulty for me. What I want is to keep the heading two style, but essentially create an exception so that the sub-heading will be called "Section 100-3.5", and it won't automatically bump Section 4 down to 5.
