all,
I've never seen this before. but I've put hyperlinks at the top of a word document that point to bookmarks in my doc. however, the BMs appear with braces around them. see images. is this normal or do I have to change a setting?

When and where do they appear with square brackets? What exactly are we looking at in the images? You've stripped out all the clues! If it's Word, then maybe the document has a style applied that adds the brackets. I've never seen them applied to a hyperlink in Word.

I didn't strip out all the clues Ali.ha ha ha. and yes, it is a word doc. this is the ms word forum, thus I posted here. the top image is supposed to show that I've turned different lines of text into hyperlinks. and one of those links points to the loc in the doc where the text in the bottom image is at. and as you can see, that text has braces around it. I showed them with the red rectangles. see them?
i'm pretty sure it's a default setting, however I've put HLs into text before and set the target loc in the doc and these braces didn't occur. not sure why it's different now. see image below for what is actually set for the HL I showed before:

OK - suit yourself, Adam. I have better things to do with my time than try to help someone who thinks that sarcasm is appropriate when another offers to help them.I showed them with the red rectangles. see them?

It's normal if you have the 'Show bookmarks' option selected.

Yes, in the Advanced section.
I didn't even see your last response Ali. I thought you had abandoned the effort due to your last reply to me. I solved it. but for others in the future, here is how to do it. it is a simple setting:
