Excel object permanently distorts when expanded in word

I am using Microsoft Office 2003.
I have pasted an Excel object in a word document.
It is a long list of dates for future appointments.
The list contains about 800 rows each representing a day in the future over the next two years.
The columns are filtered to display only the "(NonBlanks)" which is about 50 rows.
When I want to add more information and use the filter to show "(All)" it expands to about 800 rows.
After about 5 seconds of stability the width of the whole excel spreadsheet shrinks to about one inch wide on the screen and is unusable.
I have tried adjusting it using the 'Format Object' window but nothing I do works.
When I click back to word document after trying to repair it the Excel Object is so badly distorted and merged into itself that I have to close the word document without saving and reopen it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have attached the file. (See next post).
(Using the 'Events' column filter (All) to expand will trigger the problem).

    Thank you.

The paper clip icon does not work for attachments. To attach a file:

    1. Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button.
    2. On the next screen scroll down and under the Attachments section click the Manage Attachments link, which will show a pop-up window.
    3. Click the Choose File button to select a file to attached.
    4. Click the Upload button to upload the file.
    5. Then click the Close This Window button. Your file is now attached to your post.

Re: Excel object permanently distorts when expanded in word

    Solution (Sort of)

I always like to post a solution to my questions if I find one so that others may benefit.

After many hours of mucking around I worked out that the worksheet must be fully expanded (filter set to show 'All' rows) when sizeing the object to neatly fit the whole page of MS Word.
If I use filters to hide blank rows and thereby contract the sheet then the whole object reshapes to a shorter size taking up less space on the page it is embedded in.
If I resize it again to fit the whole page where it is embedded then that's fine until I unhide the filtered rows which then causes the workbook to expand off the bottom of the page and then distort.
However, if I leave it in it's 'self-adjusted' new shorter size I can use the filters and the longest it will stretch is no further than it's original size filling the whole page again.
Downside is that I can't have it fill the whole page when filtered down. (More to the point I haven't found a way yet!)

I hope this info helps anyone else with the same problem.

Your pointless posts here are raising suspicion about your motives here. If you continue to make pointless posts, then I shall terminate your posting rights here.

Embedded objects cannot span page boundaries.

Personally, I'd be using a separate Excel workbook, in conjunction with which which I'd use either:
    • a LINK field to display the filtered Excel data in any of the variety of link formats that Word supports (workbook, table, etc.); or
    • a DATABASE field in Word to both filter and display the Excel data.

    Hi AliGW,
I am really confused by your comment about pointless post. Was that referring to my post or was it referring to someone's comment on my post? If it is referring to my post I can only say that I had a genuine problem that I eventually worked out and just decided to post the solution that I found so that anyone with a similar problem can benefit from it? No ill intention was intended at all.
    Regards, Dean.

Re: Excel object permanently distorts when expanded in word

Thankyou Paul for your advice. That makes sense.

I originally had a separate Excel Workbook that I would link to as you suggested but I was trying to speed things up by embedding my appointment schedule in my To Do list in word to keep everything in one place so that I could just quickly glance at or update it in a small window slot as I arrange and categorise my To Do list. I seem to have it working now as long as I keep it within the boundaries. I will explore your DATABASE suggestion and see if I can make that work for me.

    Thanks again.

Ali's comment was specifically aimed at user Jhon654 (as shown in the first line of her post). Sometimes we have problems with someone new showing up and then posting a lot of times to random threads, sometimes very old ones, with comments like, "This post really helped me!" That person probably posted to your thread, but has since been banned and all of their posts have been removed.

Nothing for you to worry about.
