    Dates not formatting in Excel > Word Mail Merge

    I am trying to mail merge dates from Excel to a Word document.

    I have entire columns of data formatted as a date in Excel, and am using date-time format switches in Word, but I still can't get it to display as a date, and not a number. I can't change them to text, because I am performing a formula on the dates.

    Please help!

    It looks as though you have too many quote marks and/or the wrong type of quote marks.

    MERGEFIELD Date \@ “MMMM d, yyyy”: July 9, 2019
    MERGEFIELD Date \@ “MM/dd/yyyy”: 07/09/2019
    MERGEFIELD Date \@ “M-d-yy”: 7-9-19

    I tried it that way too. One post said you need both a single and double quote.

    I seriously doubt that. The example I quoted show "smart quotes" and I suspect that is wrong. I think you need one opening double quote ( " ) and one closing double quote ( " ).

    As it stands, if you DO need a single quote as well, then you're missing one for each date format.

    I tried both "smart" and "dumb" quotes.

    Re: Dates not formatting in Excel > Word Mail Merge

    Your field codes should have only a pair of straight/plain double-quotes, one on each side of the formatting switch. You may also need to use straight/plain single quotes either side of the period.:
    {MERGEFIELD Starting_Date \@ "dddd, MMM'.' d, yyyy"}
    You should also have the Excel workbook closed when running the merge. If that's not possible, see Importing Date and Time Values From Excel and Access in my Microsoft Word Date Calculation Tutorial, available at:

    or:

    Do read the document's introductory material.
