Link a number between 2 word documents

I have a number in doc1. I want to open doc2 and create a link to this number so that whenever I change the number in doc1, it will change the one in doc2. How can this be done?

    Hi Xx7,

You can do that by bookmarking the number in the source document, then using an INCLUDETEXT field in the target document, pointing to the source document and its bookmark. See Word's help file for more info in the INCLUDETEXT field.

Do note, though that editing the number in the source document is liable to delete the bookmark. You could reduce that risk by using a FILLIN field in the source document, and applying the bookmark to that. Then, whenever you want to update the value, simply select the number, press F9 to activate the field, then type in the new value.
